Melodies are at https://youtu.be/_C_t-gFYUmo
and drums and some dope old obscure poetry recordings are at https://chopperman.bandcamp.com/album/s ... e-material
Use any of this and only of this! Or add other stuff. I don't care too much.
I'll do a drawing of the winner with their SP or their recording area or something related, if they want. Also planning to make a mix of any entries downloadable or sent to [email protected], using the drawing as the cover art.
Deadline for now is next Sunday, the 25th.
Let's go!

Resampled main loops with drums, one shot delay parts played over the loops!
Used all the samples and was tempted to try some guitar over the top but it didnt really add anything so I didnt bother! Edited scene from one of my favourite books/movie; a clockwork orange!

Always a pleasure to find oneself in the company of fellow droogs.
Help yourself to a glass of Moloko Plus, and perhaps later, a drop of the ol' ultra-violence.

Cheers!

This isn't a criticism of this particular battle, coz I've seen it in others too, and obvs the samples here were great with a lot to be done to them, but, since it's slim pickings with regards to number of participants...

Personally, when I saw the options, I thought I might sit this one out, coz it's like "Gor blimey, have I really got to trawl through all that lot?!... But then, if I don't I might miss something really good!... But I really can't be bothered to trawl thru 2 1/4 hours of stuff for a forum beat battle... OMG! One simply does not know what to do!" etc etc etc. It was only coz I had a quick flick through and something immediately jumped out at me that I got stuck in and I got something going pretty quickly (coz, as I say, they are great samples)...but I still felt either like I might be missing out on some better snippets I hadn't listened to yet and/or that it felt like a mammoth task to go through all 3. That frustration.

The recent battles I've seen that had the most and most varied submissions have been where the sources offered were just a few mins of a mish mash of different snippets of random stuff with a couple of breaks or hits at the end or where there was just a couplafew songs to flip. Those ones feel more "immediate" somehow and, even tho there's less to work with, it feels like there's more to get your teeth into. And, as a spectator, it's more interesting to see what different people do with the same somewhat limited material, ya dig?

Again, not a criticism - just how it felt to me personally (so can probably be ignored, as I'm propa whacky in the brainbox) and is merely a suggestion. Like I say, it seems like the ones where there are long source materials seem to get less playaz rollin' and that might be why?

Aaaaaaaanyway...

Asha C - great stuff. Love the crunch on the drums, as I said on youtube, lolz. When that Come To Daddy-like distortion comes in - BOOM.

Lentilsoup - great. Had me "hearing" other stuff to go with it, which is always a good sign of a nice loop. Almost had a shamisen sounding like a pedal steel at points too!

See what else comes in... I'm assuming Chopperman will be in swinging with what he's cooked up shortly?

Well, this is embarrassing. Must've been tripping, setting this up with the vision of an epic mix. Fair points made by Girru about the abundance of sample material. I had hopes that the abundance would make for a better mix. I like to encourage the searching of a record for a vibe, but I realize these battles are kind of a break from that time consuming kind of a search. I didn't expect people to listen to all of it probably because I'm the type of cunt to skim through records without much care. I'm extending the deadline until Wednesday out of spite for myself.

Wow, really nice art style Chopper, and tell me that was some sort of filter to do the hatching cause it must have taken bloody ages to do that otherwise!

Regards the length of samples, don't feel bad dude, I did exactly the same and hadn't thought about how they would feel sitting through an hour-long documentary, but I did it for the same reason you did, just to give them more to chew at in case they needed it, hahaha.

Believe it or not I've not even heard your samples or indeed any of the submissions yet. I prefer to wait until the poll is run so that I can just open each participant's link in their own tab and go through them one by one and place my vote. As I go through them I just close the tabs of the tracks I liked the least until I'm left with a favourite.

I'll definitely be taking Girru's sentiments into account if I ever find myself hosting another SPBB though, he does make a good point. And of course I'm going to have to start listening to the source sample as soon as it's uploaded when I finally decide to participate in one of these things.

And speaking of participation, you should have posted some of those drawings from the start, it might have attracted participation just to get themselves drawn!

I thought I didn't have much time these days, but I couldn't resist Chopperman's price! Chop, your drawings are great! :D

I like the grimey samples you provided. In the beginning i was a little bit overwhelmed, too, because of the infinite possibilities, but in the end less is more and i just spend a half an hour to run through the samples, skipping here and there, taking what sounds good,

The front sampler - I learned this meaningful term from Girru - was the sp-404mk2. I also wrote the patterns on this machine and used the effects.
The arrangement and mixing was done on the SP-808 with its 4 track sequencer. On one track I made additional recordings with my new crush in my homestudio, the Alpha Juno 2. Then i played it back into the mk2 for the master eq + compression. After that i exported my beat to sd-card for uploading.

Arranging with the SP-808 is so cool. I love it's linear sequencer with the copy, paste, cut and insert functions. And the possibility to copy audio snippets back and forth between sequencer track and pads. If only the 808 could do true multitrack recording! I wish Roland brought a modern SP-808mk2 as an alternative to daw... oh there is the MV- 80x0....

https://thegreatnoire.bandcamp.com/track/give

EDIT: Because the time limit was extended until tomorrow i used the chance to remaster my beat on the mk2...no changes where made on the beat itsfelf but i wasn't satisfied with the tape simulation and used the classic eq instead.

bass was made from compressing and isolating a flute sound around the 11 min mark. The kicks felt a bit soft in the samples so chopped a kick from the given breaks, isolated, pitched, compressed and then repeated the process again and again until i got a thick and thumpy kick. the snare was lightly processed. the hihats was hidden behind lots of vinyl crackle so again compressed and then used isolator until i could hit a sweet spot. went the boombap route with this beat, all put together with the sequencer, might make a little video behind this beat too :) used microchops for the first time in a while to sustain some notes

*edit https://www.reddit.com/r/SP404/comments ... &context=3 made this video with a little breakdown maybe it could bring some more entries in

Hello forum, just thought I'd attach a copy of myself to show you all how handsome I am!
Sure I'm in bat form here but I did explain a while back that I was a vampire.

It's not like I was after a free portrait or anything, no, not like you lot suddenly crawling out of the woodwork with your beats and all!
