Thanks to all who completed this challenge. Lots of great things came out of it... including but not limited to lots of great music. Special thanks to those who finished early or on time and hung with the extended deadlines while the rest of us caught up to them.

Anyone who would like to review the initial rules or concept behind the challenge, or read further info on any of the entries can visit the initial thread here: http://sp-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=25759

The full marathon remains an elusive target, with the field of finishers completing the half-marathon requirements (please correct me if I'm wrong). Congrats to all the finishers! It's great to know that despite all the messed up stuff going on in the world there are still generous vibrant folks willing to share their talent and creative vision with their fellow humans for the pure joy of making music. Rock on SP fam!

The poll is open for a week. Voting is open to anyone who listens to all the mixes in their entirety. I think everyone who is in the comp should include a brief review of each entry.

Sharris - Really digging these vibes, love your use of vocals as well, from the looks of the stack and what I can hear it sounds like they’re all from there too so props to that as well, looks like an interesting selection of music! 10:58 my favorite part in your mix, nasty little segment.

Ghost Bazz- love the narrative element to your piece, your use of pan and reverb/ whatever other effects you use are s u p e r e f f e c t i v e in relation to the narrative element of your piece, cheers! loving the 18:45 segment also in yours!

Crane - Idk if you have these acapellas on record, but still a nice collection of acapellas nonetheless. your beats are a really nice compliment to them as well, very old school some really dope stuff. my favorites your beat at 5:00, super groovy and the vocals are great too.

Green Dutch - my favorite of the group, excellent blend of 404 w/ 303, only one out of the group to use tapes and it give it such different sound quality, will definitely consider a tape or two for next marathon myself  the piece at 5:08 is my favorite of your mix, overall your mix was super gritty which i love, but I think you are supposed to meet the 15 min. marker, which leads me to my vote:

l i f - Gritty little micro shaunts, overall your mix was great, really groovy and another great display of 404 use, im not sure what other instruments/ samplers you use, regardless, you make some g u d m u z i k . Love that you separated your tracks into little pieces, went over the time limit, went full marathon, and somehow budgeted $5 into 7 records, props for all the effort! 6, 11 - 14 are my favorites of your mix, especially 12, i think you executed that one great. thanks for also being the first to post, it was nice to see yours, and learn what I was allowed to do w/ mine.

Peace Y’all, dope stuff from everyone!
v o t e, and if the tracks are on soundcloud

@GhostBazz thanks again for the challenge, great opportunity for practice, and learning from what you guys do to improve my own creations.

I look forward to running more marathons with you guys.

You really want a review? I'm just gonna start typing while the vodka and mushies do their thing.

This came down to a pretty heavy choice for my top two being Ghost bazz & Sharris. As Flying Thunder said about my mix "very old school", it is our 78 & 79 selves that have that original "Old School" locked in. In a mix that is what I want to hear.

-Sharris the last song at 13.05 - 14.09 was amazing that was a fucking nas track, then it just stopped and went to ? (the question mark = shit) The rest of the mix was very "endtroducing" which you know is a pretty heavy compliment.
The "shadow" style/repetitive beats and boopbap at 13.05 is what it is all about to me.
I wish there where some lyrics on it.

-Ghostbazz The first few minutes won me over ten fold, the production as Sharris mentioned in another post is incredible. I just kept waiting for that 1996 to hit. I love the mix and it feels great on the...boomers... I liked the KRS battle threat, like my Guru "you're clowning yourself" song. keeping it 90's in 2018. After 17.33 not my cup of tea.

These two mixes were very prominent strong mixes that remind me what my love for hiphop culture is all about. Whether or not it is, I always take it as a compliment when someone says my shit sounds "old school". Ghost Bazz's mix brought some 90's to 2018 while keeping it true, the low fi and broken beat was well incorporated. And Sharris's mix, to me just sounded "old school" (compliment intended).

I will edit back for more reviews.

I've commented on just about everyone SC beats. What a fuckin great round of tracks. This should be made into a compilation on bandcamp. I can't pick a winner really, but I'm gonna go with Lif. I loved your flips man. Real dope shit. Crane you had a beautiful mix too. Ghost and Sharris flipped some magic too. Wow guys really dope music here. It was an honor to be part of it.

We all have our internal vibes, to which these mixes pulse.

Excellent stuff. Love the beat that drops @ 3:00, and the following track at 4:17. Feels like some Quasimoto followed by a Beat Konducta scene... echoing what Green Dutch already mentioned. All the source material is balanced well and feels cohesive. Love how you get loose with it man... boundaries get pushed to great effect. Love the drum work on the track that drops at 15:30. "Why Do They Keep Me" is also sick. And then that El-P remix is on another level. Great closing track. Way to represent. This plays like an album, and you cooked it up quick.

The Green Dutch
Dope aesthetic. Your signature sound is on display. The tape compression comes through for some extra ruggedness. Dope use of effects throughout. Nice use of source material for interludes/skits. Love the beat that drops at 2:43. The reverb on those chops sounds great... I'd imagine it's picked up from the original? Sounds great. The piano track that drops around 4:10 is sick... really haunting. Good flow to this. The last two beats are also really dope. Inside of me... what on earth is she talking about? Just playing. It's a mean track. Lots of heat packed into 9:30!

Flying Thunder
Cool opening track. I like the dialogue and vocal samples throughout. Nice use of effects throughout. Real interesting mix of source stuff going into this... comes out with a really unified sound. Dig the 80's track around 2:30 with the fashion world dialogue on top. Bigger chunks of the source material in spots. This has a great sound collage feel to it. You did a great job balancing all the different elements. The track at 5:00 is another nice blend of beat and dialogue. The beat at 11:30 is also great. Love how it morphs into the section with the reverse chops... the cut chimes... nice drums. Great mix.

Crane
Love the flow of this. That first beat really gets shit poppin in a hurry. Haven't listened to that uptempo old school in a minute, but you capture the sound perfectly and keep it rugged with the Raekwon. The Jeru track is dope. The blends on this are excellent. Love the swinging drum loops and basslines throughout this mix. The remixing is excellent. Yeah dude... head nod and smile factor on this one are large. The section that kicks off at 7:30 is on some Native Tongues shit for sure. The scratching is dope. Love the drum layering through here and again with the basslines. Your DJ skills really elevate this mix. This is dope.

Sharris
Nice drums throughout. The kick and snare processing is great. Love the thunder in the opening track. Also love what sounds like lots of classic rock chops. Real unified sound to your mix. I like the use of vocal chops from the source material. Cool effects use. The combo of the last two tracks into the closing track is great. The vocal chops on the track at 12:00 compliment the guitar perfectly. Some really soothing stuff. The triumphant vibe of the track that follows, and then the sparseness of the closing track with those highly emotive vocal chops make for a powerful finish. Excellent mix. Some very reflective moments in there.

These are all dope. It's great being able to get down with everyone's unique style for an entire mix. I'm going to continue to listen to these and then ghost vote if I reach the point of making a confident decision.

Thanks for the love guys!
Creating a mix is HARD (at least for me it was), but I'm proud I made it to the finish line. I actually had a lot of plans for the mix, but after chopping all that shit up & getting the structures of the beats done, I WAS DONE! I learned sooooooooo much from this tho....soooo much.

I listened to all of the mixes, but I want to listen thru again......
A bunch of family came to visit over the weekend, so I didn't get a chance to listen & provide feedback, but I will tonight 8)

Hey everyone, can I ask favour and we extend the poll?
Just got back to work - have heard the mixes but don't have time for comments/feedback right now... at least not to the level others have expressed!

Lots to say, just need time to get it down in words!
