DM/AstroPrince - https://soundcloud.com/tearingapartlisa/spb163 Great mood, dark and dirty in the opening like impending doom, then lightens up with the samples in the end, love the ping-ponging L+R on the snare. Tight composition with a narrative and a crunchy-crackly loosness... Awesome job! dimXL - https://soundcloud.com/dimxl/spbb163 Great vibe as an opening, loved the lofi-ness of the hiss, though the kick was a bit cardboard-y (maybe just my speakers). Would have liked a new element to come in at some stage (this almost happens at around the 35sec mark, but then is more the same... fine if not for the one-minute rule) but the little stop-on-a-dime arpeggio to finish is icing on this nice little cake! asha c - https://soundcloud.com/ashaxx4/sp-beat-battle-163 Pretty melody, love the turntable-wobble queasiness and the production is top-notch lofi. Nit-piks from me are that my ears want to hear more than a beat and loops... and I want to hear a story told that has a definite ending, i.e. no fade-outs!! ![]() davidarcade - https://soundcloud.com/arcadeswagger/tr ... h-spbb-163 Killer track, with all the elements I love from hip hop sampler-ism/juggling - for me this would have been really easy (or hard!) to separate from the best this week in the vote-stakes... however I'm afraid it works just as well as it does because it's able to develop over 1 min 40s.... commercial - https://soundcloud.com/commercialwasteland/sp163 Opening loops sits real nice with the drums - a little variation in the middle section and then brings it all home at the end... not a bad piece of storytelling! Beat was solid, if maybe a little stiff but the rolling-nature of the keys kinda keeps things open and breathing. Good work! jmlweb - https://soundcloud.com/jmlweb/sp-forums-beat-battle-163 A real head-nodder with the wah-effect (and others!) put to great use... another example of a track that can be listened to as a loop-in-itself - listened to this one several times over... ellaguru - https://app.box.com/s/qfbnn8bx10fgkkwo8l58 While I respect & appreciate the approach on this one (love that it is 'played' by hand) but the groove was a bit stiff and the production a little harsh for me.. eighty9s - https://soundcloud.com/eighty9s/inapickle-spbb163 Wow! Damn! Hell-yes! Love this track!! But wait, it's 1:29...? Honestly, this is in my top three for the week and would be hard to split, but are the rules rules or just guidelines? ritchrd- download/file.php?id=2249 Can you pass it to the left, bro? That's some abstract-sound collage... sp is so good for those jackhammer tones... isis - https://soundcloud.com/isishigher/sp-battle Chill, hazed out... love the crackle and dirt to this one and the subtlety of what alls going on under there. And then it ju MarcoGrouch - https://soundcloud.com/marco-grouch/h0000009 As I stated in the 163-thread, downloaded this and had it on repeat for over twenty minutes... now its on my phone (might make it my ringtone) carlos - https://soundcloud.com/oxhead/battle-163 Part A and part B - sets the theme with some sweet bubbles then flips it all up for some battle-beats in the second half nice and sweet. Fine, fine work. frkwsk - https://soundcloud.com/maaxfreekowski/battle-163 Epic filtering over a killer beat. Awesome to be part of this - great to hear so many different approaches to a limited palate, great work all-round...makes a nice playlist in itself.. My vote (my first on these boards) goes to MarcoGrouch. l i f |

it's 5:02 A>M please excuse typos Dm/astroprince[u] around :26 i had my head bobbing haha, ight track [u]DimXl very very nonabrasive, tracks like these deserve more than a minute, buuuut rules asha c intro reminded me of mujo, what ever happend to him? it's slow, chill little tune davidarcade part c is what got my attention the most, revers use on the sample was baller, you baller you ![]() commercial a very linear type beat, it just didn't catch my attention really. jmlweb lots of energy and some bubbles at the end. You've only had your sx for a month?! Very impressive, looking forward to hearing more from you. ellaguru pointing out the obvious, it's abstract that's it. eighty9sahh yes, this beat. the drone, and shakey percs. this beat grabbed my attention all the way through till the end. were those drums apart of the samples? c'mon you can tell me, i won't tell anyone. jk props man! ritchrd lol isis cool ambience bro macrogrouchit hit hard, very unique very mytical haha lif not sure how i felt about it, very stuttery, great use of the hats, abrasive, a lot of movement, just like i said super staccatto. can't wait to hear more. frkwsk airy, open feel. not sure if the snare was intentionally meant to sound underwhelming. kick was pronounced myvotegoestoeighty9s. |

as some of you know I hate giving people cons cause it seems like everyone works pretty hard on their beat but I know it's encouraged so I'm going to try to give both pros and cons to everyone, hopefully that'll be more constructive than "yeah I wasn't really feelin the beat mane" but also will have the other side effect of trying to come up with cons to ones I really like Astro - love the way the percussion/hat switchups accentuate the rolling feel of the beat, however the reverb felt a little much and the snare roll didn't fit sonically [idk how the 505's verb is, but I feel like on the SX even on the lowest mix setting it's still slightly too much..] dimxl - loved the popping sounds, and I have no idea how you got the guitar to sound like part of the beat [actually I don't know how anyone flips guitars sounding right but I guess I'm too much of a novice hahaha], however it did feel a little empty on a whole asha - pure vibes! had the nod activated, however the drums WERE super quiet... even though it fit the vibe I think it was a little too much of a contrast david - had some nice aggyness, that intro had brung the heat and the filter in was like "aw shit, it's goin down" but then it switched up and I really didn't feel the switchup after the intro. I felt the snare didn't do the job for this type of track and I wasn't overly fond of the drum pattern. You also went way over the 1 minute mark. commercial - pretty straightforward beat, went for the nods and I especially liked the fill in the middle with the pad/stab into the suuuuper bitcrushed snare, however I really didn't like the way the intro and outro sample fit in with the rest of the beat jmlweb - loved the wah and the rolling drums, but isn't mixing in Logic cheating? a side effect of the wah was that the outro was really nice and felt like an ending, a nitpick is [personally] you left a little too much boom/room in the kick but it fits anyway, I'm disappointed with the DAW cheat! ella - love the chaotic crazyness, a semi-con is it sounds off-looped but that kind of adds to the wonkyness [good thing]. I feel though like it's still really empty and the only 'music' sample use is super tiny and thin and in the background. eighty9s - nodssssssssss. I love the weird hi hat pumping mass of... whatever that is. the drum switch up at the end was dope. I guess the con is that the pitching fill felt kind of off. damn that other guy was right though you went over the 1 minute mark too ritchrd - hahahahahahaha what the hell is even happening. when I heard that stutter I thought it was about to go HARD! but then it didn't. RIP [we need more Jigglypuff202] isis - love the super lowkey mellow shit, especially the whisping at the end. but it's a little too hard to hear anything that's going on it's SUPER quiet and it's being drowned out by the hum Marco - u suck, but u tried lif - love the start n stop stuttery vibe, weird as fuck but still catches nods. the more I listen the more it grows on me. though near the end some of the musical stabs don't really catch in with the groove properly carlos - the drum beat caught mad nods, but the samples just weren't there.. felt pretty empty. the end crash was pretty cool though frkwsk - love the shoegaze type vibe and while not a pro of the song the image fit perfectly, vibed out like a motherfucker, love the fill with the super verbed snare too. I guess a con would have to be the drums don't really have enough swing to them, but a good amount of swing I think would detract from the type of song. just a miniscule amount more damn frkwsk was late a day on his submission though... everyone cheatin up in here well the top 3 are 89, frkwsk, and asha but I'm goin asha cause it seems like he didn't cheat on a side note thanks to everyone who liked/said nice things about my weird thing, I especially liked "Insect Horror Movie" gonna make that my new genre now ![]() |

DM- Love the trip-hop vibe, an imaginary rapper was in my head the whole time flowing over it. Feels like a Hitchcock movie. DimXL - Voted. Can't describe it but I have quirky taste. If windows were liquid and had a sound. Commercial - Very artistic feel, don't know if I'm at an art museum or exploring a maze in Nintendo 64. JML - points for the boom bap space vibe. Eighty 9 - Same deal. Deep sea odyssey Marco - I swear all the sounds you'd hear in a theater, pop corn crunching, snacks being chewed on and opened, snippets of an OST. If a movie theater could beat box this would be it. Lif - if you were to release this track. A heavy drum drop at :39 would blow people away. It has the build up for an aggressive climax. And that's not to dismiss anybody else. I normally do beat battles to exercise my SP so I never really care how clean things are V.S. how weird, sloppy or out of control these beats come out. Personally I judge my own work all the time so I know the difference between going crazy, weird and pushing myself. Everyone above are personal favorites, by the emotion of each track before technique. I'd say this was a pretty mentally visual round. I'm glad people used the underwater squid sample and used it in out of the box ways. Next chance I get I'll choose something just as weird. Basically what early 90's nickelodeon was visually is how I heard these tracks in my head. A lot of alien signals, slime, sea creatures and overall a soundtrack that would bring strange environment to life. Also, welcome aboard the new comers. |

Chose commercial. I liked the air/space in between notes/beats...sometimes a little silence goes a long way. I need to remember that if I do this again! Nice job. Marco and Ella were excellent as well, Ella reminded me that 4/4 might be overrated! I love odd time signatures, but the only way to get that on the 404 is by hand, I think? Nice job by all. |

Sorry, I'm a n00b :S I thoguht I could mix in Logic because of the first point of the rules: "1. All SPs only SPs. all chops, all sequencing. External mastering (E.Q., compression) is ok but don't rearrange anything. The exception to this is if any of the SPs have a useable time stretch feature that is disallowed to be fair to the ones that don't have it." However I'lll try to mix in the SP too. I want to thank anyone for teaching me in this great forum. My vote is for eighty9s because I love the atmosphere and the way he plays with the bubbles sample. I also love how the diferent drum constructions sound. carlos wrote: jmlweb lots of energy and some bubbles at the end. You've only had your sx for a month?! To be fair I got it on 7 of july, although I was travelling (without it) 2 weeks in august so a month and a half ![]() Thanks to everyone for your advices! |

jmlweb wrote: External mastering (E.Q., compression) is ok but don't rearrange anything. that looks like it's from an old battle, I haven't been here long but every winner picks a new set of rules for the game when they post the sample [unless I totally missed something but I didn't see that at all in the post] off-topic: a pet peeve of mine is that "don't use timestretch or pitch because it's unfair to other SPs" jmlweb wrote: "The exception to this is if any of the SPs have a useable time stretch feature that is disallowed to be fair to the ones that don't have it." now idk if that was in reference to the 202 [or what SP would have "usable" timestretch] but the 202's timestretch sounds way worse than the 303/404sx, plus they have FX to cover up the warble. They also have chromatic pitch which can be insanely useful in some situations despite the reese phasing it introduces.the 202 can't process anything and the pitch pitches all pads at once and there's no way to get around that. Even worse they don't allow the 202 to be bounced to tape most of the time. That's like saying you can't use resample or any FX or sample trimming besides mark because the 202 doesn't have it. Or that you can't use an intergrated mic because the 303 doesn't have one [battles that allow field recordings]. That just sounds extremely bitter. No disrespect to whoever wrote that, I just find that so totally over the top bizarre. [EDIT: I think a better analogy would be the 404's vinyl sim is disqualified because it has a compressor instead of a bandpass, yet the 404SX's bandpass is allowed to be used still... due to the nature of SPs there will never be a totally even same user unless you start making really complex rules like 404 OG Battle ONLY, NO CF Cards allowed.. or something like that... damn, sorry, didn't mean to turn this into a huge fucking rant] ellaguru wrote: the "delay Dakim method" I love feedback beats, since they deteriorate quickly you can just keep throwing more shit in as it constantly evolves[devolves]. |
