Pootie Tang - sp119
Brutal and claustrophobic - I liked how the filter at 00:25 reduced the beat to an essential, pulsating entity

blavatsky - war of the roses
An encyclopedia of interesting and varied sounds, unfortunately the song seems to lack a strong sense of structure

lerabot - spfrms119(?) nastydub
I was impressed by your skills: you created a great beat out of nowhere at 0:32, keep it up !

WIZZ'ART OF OSC - Slick Flower
Nice beat - that lead vocal-like sound is fantastic, and good job with the melody, too !

mad evil science - highly effected
I really liked both the dreamy, nostalgic intro and the straight, resolute main beat: I just wished it would evolve a little more, but (as the title suggests) effects took center stage

chopperman FALSKDJFLAKSDJF
The morphing that starts from 1:12 and takes to the effected beat at 1:22 is impressive, and sounds like yet another magic trick of yours

sleepy eyes - spb119
Took me many attempts to fully appreciate it: sounds like there are many different layers playing at the same time, with different rhythmic and melodic combinations happening at once, but the more I listen to it, the more it draws me in - great job !

Dj Ks - MidnightRose
The most pensive and melancholic song of the contest, reminded me that every rose has its thorn - unexpectedly moving

asha c - battle119final
Eerie vibe - you can feel the tension in the air with this one !
Magistral use of the effects (especially the reverse) and sounds, I really liked the dense hats/cymbals and the impressive bass line at 1:03 - maybe the main beat is a little subdued

IIIII - octupus houser (gets my vote)
A mysterious intro is followed by a menacing first part, where huge horn sounds and a pounding beat overwhelm the listener with a feeling of impeding danger.
Then, after a stunning transition, we are taken to the second part, where relaxed melodies and a nice shuffle beat reassure us: the worst is over.
What an adventure !

Listening & commenting as I go... Shit, this is gonna be a bunch of listening! Great to see so many competitors around here at the moment.

Sleepy Eyes: Err, not too sure about this, there's a lot of things that are out of time here. The drums in the right channel keep putting me off. Sorry man, I know you're getting loads of love on this beat but it sounds sloppy to me. Some nice chops, plus making the guitar strum an off-beat syncopated stab was a nice touch. Almost gave it a reggae feel for a second.
IIIII: Damn, man! This is nuts! Great sound design, love the hard compression & sub-bass. Dragging those horns around was sick too. Everything in this sounds well considered. You nailed it this round, again.
James Matthew: What happened to your beat? Can't find it on Soundcloud. Listened to your other beats though- you clearly know what you're doing with a sampler. Curious to hear what you did with the Axelrod sample.
Lerabot: When the beat dropped this one clicked, loved the almost piss-taker IDM switches. This one's a beat I won't forget for a while.
Asha C: Dude, you're on some weird psychedelic vibe right here! The bass got a bit distorted, but stayed suitably nasty. Kinda like a possessed Portishead, seriously all this was missing was Beth Gibbons. Had to listen to this twice, just to get an idea of all those layers.
CGKO: Sounds like an MF Doom beat on crack. Cool to hear a few different portions of the sample picked out. A bit sketchy though.
Chickadee: Same vibe as CGKO, just fuller sounding & sketchier. Curious thing to hear those two back-to-back.
Lazerbear: Whoah, damn those drums are heavy! Sounds like that Skull Snaps break. You were going for a heavy 90s boom bap vibe, right? The chops could've done with a bit less gating though.
DJ KS: Relaxed vibe, took a while to get started. Some nice filters & reverb on the guitars. Drums were a bit loose & unstructured, which took a bit away from your beat unfortunately. Keep at it though, you're getting better!
Pootietang: Ah man, so much filtering going on here. Sounds like you've paid a lot of attention to the LA Beat Scene mob, right? Always cool to hear a LPF & wah combo. I wanted to hear more but it just ended!
Mad Evil Science: Hahahaha! That intro was trolling! Great rhythm here, nodding along like a total yes-man. Sounds like you went to town on this one, especially with all those effect stutters. Again, nice to hear someone listening for different notes to sample.
Wizz'art of Osc: Noticed you listed both the SP303 & SP404 in Soundcloud. Did you use both? The rules in these battles are one SP only. Sounds like you added some synth too. It'll pay to read up on those rules for the next battle. Still, nice job anyway. Like the way you turned the bass around into a new riff, it worked really well with your subtle little melody.
Blavatsky: Damn, it gets a bit dubby in there mate! You resampled this one really well in so many ways, but I just want to hear more of that reverbed stab. Does that make me a bad person?
Chopperman: HAHAHA! Best name of the battle! Weird, weird tune to match. It develops well but ends just when it sounds like you were about to flip it in another way. Do you much more experimental gear like this?

Highlights: IIIII, Asha C, Mad Evil Science

Really hard to pick my favourite of these three. All had really different angles to the rest of the contributions & plenty of variety in their beat's structure. Ended up voting for IIIII. I just can't get past tough the vibe you brought while using the 404's DJ FX looper (that's the one, right?) way more subtly than the other contributors. The pretty much perfect mix was the icing on the cake too.

SLEEPY EYES- Really nice guitar intro. Had a real sweet laid back feel, like unfolding said..sloppy but i liked that to start with but about half way through with the syncopation it felt lost.

IIIII- Awesome intro, the reverse hit before it kicked in really gave it a kick then boom..Sweet pushing drums that kept it moving forward. Nice horn sounds and the bass was just BOOOOM, Loved the james bond esque ending, total shift in mood.

JAMES MATTHEW- WHERE'D YOU GO?

LE RABOT- Wasn't keen on the bit crushing/radio tuner effect intro but then once it kicked in it had a crazy effed up DISCO sound, like being at a disco on a bad trip. I think a little too much for me on the crushing effect. I really like the DJFX looper you used though.

CGKO- Nice bass on the intro, like the looper effect use. The bass was the real part that kept me hooked.I think personally it could have benefitted with more variation.

CHICKADEE- SWEET Intro, for a minute i was expecting walk this way to drop. The drums had that booming compressed sound. Not bad

LAZERBEAR- Loved the beat. Booming compressed drums, nice use of the hats. A little long. For a beat that long I felt it needed more variation or a drop maybe.

DJ KS- At first expected it to come in booming with that epic intro but the lazy, gloomy feel was a nice surprise. The drums at 1:01 would have been cool if they came in slightly earlier I thought, that might just be because that was my favourite part though so it might be personal preference. Cool Reversed ending, nice.

POOTIETANG- GREAT first beat, Nice use of the wah effect but i think it should have had something going on in front of it, so only part of the track was filtered instead of it all. Sweet drums. Ending was kinda abrupt but overall good beat.

MAD EVIL- SWEET AS USUAL MAN, those diving sounds were trippy as hell, once it kicked in it was like BOOOOOM. Nice melody. Filter effect that came in was a cool touch. Nice stutters too.

WIZZ'ART OF OSC- Cool laid back vibe, the samples were used really well. Nice bass line and great melody. Guitar hits kept it nodding nicely.

BLAVATSKY- NICE DUBBY FEEL, that's what I was aiming for but it didn't come out as well as this. SPACEY klangy reverb hits were sweeeeeet, as was the sub bass.

CHOPPERMAN- Intro was creepy, first couple of seconds should have definitely been kept in more in the background maybe. Got all twisted up in the middle and experimental which was AWESOME. I felt like it wanted to just pound in at any moment into a more refined, structured beat. Was really digging it but it went to much into the experimental realm as opposed to the structured, simplistic part it started off with. Great to see something different and adventurous but could have been more balanced.

REALLLLLY TOUGH decision. Throw up between IIIII, Wizz'art of Osc and Blavatsky. Gonna have to vote Blavatsky though, couldn't resist with that bass.
