Post subject:  Gap of silence when capturing a loop. Is there any fix?

When capturing a loop, I have two gaps of silence both in the beginning and in the end of the loop, about 0.2 second total which basically renders loop capture feature useless. Are there any known reasons or fixes for this issue?

- Avoid Auto Start at all times;
- Use a footswitch;
- Un-mark loops after saving to pad;
- Resample.

Thank you.

I've been recording without autostart and using footswitch, so these two didn't help.

What do you mean by un-marking loops?
About resampling, isn't it a direct way to wrong loop length and as a result wrong BPM?

I've found out some details on my issue that make me even more pessimistic about the device.

1. Length of loop sampled with SP-555 and length of loop, converted with wave convertor are DIFFERENT. This means that what you hear isn't what you get after converting.

2. Removing marks from the loop reveals it's exact length which is slightly longer than recording BPM by unveiling silence gaps in the beginning and in the end of the loop. Basically, SP-555 captures a bit more including silence but a bit less if the silence is completely trimmed.

This makes SP-555 very inconvenient when working with DAW. I work in software industry, and this kind of solution is called a HACK. SP-555 doesn't actually capture complete 4 measures of a given BPM, it captures a bit less, then adds silence gaps at both sides, and then trims the loop with markers to fit the BPM.

A big shame for $800 device assuming that I bought it specifically for capturing loops from external sound sources for further work in DAW . A HUGE disappointment, I feel ripped off. Thank you, Roland. Never again.

are you using a footswitch?
if so, i've encountered a similar problem but was able to correct it.

Yes, I tried both footswitch and manual methods.

What was your solution? I need it desperately, otherwise, I'll just have to sell my SP

Thank you

Here's the answer I've got from Roland tech support

Quote:
If you TRUNCATE your sample you should be able to get rid of the silence before and after your sample.

So basically they confirm that there is a silence, and the way the whole thing works is a dirty hack.

Unfortuanately, after manual truncation the sample is shorter than it is supposed to be, and it's quite noticable. In order the sample to fit the BPM correct, some silence should be kept.

Seems that I'll be selling my SP and will continue making loops with my KP3.

:) I'm not in US, I'm in Ukraine, Eastern Europe, so the shipping cost will make a little sense in buying it.

I'll be selling it for around $650 assuming that the new one costs $1000 here.

You guys have the cheapest prices in US :)

i really hope this isn't true or can be worked around. a loop capture that doesn't manage a full bar without silence is a misnomer.

is this confirmed? i've been considering a 555 for a while now, but this doesn't sound too good :( Maybe i should stick to getting an mpc1000.

if it is thats just the loop capture any way. just a side feature of the 555. the sampler is still a beast besides that

Hi guy,

I really like the design concept of sp 555 however, this loop capture issue seems to be CRITICAL for people who like to produce a live music.

Without having a workaround, this really come down people need to work on software sampler like ableton, then transfer pre-maded samples to Sp 555, do live performance.

It sounds to me, SP 555 becomes expensive sounds card with effect pedal, come with useless loop capture or composing capability.

If I knew this, I would go with "LouchPad" from Novation, MIDI external pad, which allows me to live performance using Alberton, which cost me $250.

There are a lot of review on YOUTUBE, check it out.

Any way,
I REALLY LIKE ASK ROLAND TO FIX THIS FIREWARE BUG FOR MUSCIAN!! WHICH PROBABLY COST THEM ONLY $50K of SOFTWARE ENGINEER SALARY.

"if it is thats just the loop capture any way. just a side feature of the 555. the sampler is still a beast besides that"

Side feature? My sp-555 is in the mail right now and I will be fucking PISSED if the loop capture both "sounds of shit" and cannot record in time. For a live musician, the loop capture is THE main feature, for the draw of resampling and effecting yourself live.

I was planning on using a foot pedal, but if that doesn't work and these other people are substantiated then I too will be selling the sp-55 after it arrives.

Is there anyone else in sp-forums who can answer this? Ive read all over, come on guys give us a little feedback.... not too impressed.
