Post subject:  Assigning MIDI to SP-555 Pads...

Hi,

Has anyone find out a way to assign MIDI notes to SP-555 pads? Originally it was impossible to assign MIDI notes to the pads, it was fixed which made it very impossible to play Drums through MIDI cable from another module/synth.

Thanks.

do u meen that you want to use another controller like a keyboard, trigger finger or drum brain and pads to trigger your samples? i

if so i believe it should work the same as on the 404

"Triggering pads - the other useful way of using MIDI with your 404 is to use another machine's keys or pads to trigger the 404's sounds. This can overcome the 404's lack of velocity sensitivity. For example, if you have a MIDI Keyboard/Controller; you plug the MIDI cable between the two machines and ensure that they are sending/receiving on the same MIDI Channel. Now, when you press a key/pad on your MIDI controller, the appropriate pad on the 404 will be triggered.
The note B2 on your controller will trigger Bank A Pad 1 on the 404, A# 3 on your controller will control Bank A Pad 12, and so on. You will need to use the next MIDI Channel up from the one you are using to access the G,H,I and J Banks. B 2 on the next channel up triggers Bank G Pad 1 and so on.
Although the 404's pads are not velocity sensitive, the 404's sequencer will record the different velocities that it gets sent via MIDI. This can be really useful in overcoming the 404's single-velocity."

you might try reassigning the signals on your controller to that of the 555

When you use SP-555 as a controller for a module/synthesizer the pads receive fixed notes. For example if pads 1, 2, 3 ,4 and 5 will receive A, B, C,D, and F notes you cannot assign a different note. Maybe I'm missing something n the manual but I cannot assign the notes/signal that I wish to like you can assign in MPC, padKontrol, etc.

Does anyone knows how to assign the notes/signal you want to play in the pads when you use SP-555 as a controller?

they are fixed. you have options.
1. document what the fixed notes are, program you other module to send those notes

2. http://www.bome.com/midi/translator/ this does alot of things but translating midi messages is one of them.

it might be helpful to mention what your using to try and control the 555

Hi,

Can you please give me more details of the option :

"1. document what the fixed notes are, program you other module to send those notes"

I want to use SP-555 as a midi controller to play drums. This will not effect the quality of the sound. When we sample in SP-555 the quality of the sound is not as good as the the source of the sound. You listen very carefully and it is not as real as it sounds in the original module/synth.

I'm using Waldorf Blofeld, MicroX, Yamaha QY100 on the hardware and NI Komplete 5, Logic Pro, Reason 4 on the software side.

One of the worst cons/demerits of SP-555 is that the PADS RECEIVE FIXED NOTES AND YOU CAN'T ASSIGN WHAT YOU WANT. This is a software issue and I wish Roland should come out with a new upgrade and made this available to SP-555users.
