ok so pattern select mode pad 1 should be a kick first the 2 hi hat and 3rd pad snare?

Do you understand what pattern select mode is?

Turn that button OFF now you are in just regular/sample mode
Put some samples on pads like you said, Kick / hh/ Snare 1,2,3 on bank A
now hit pattern select....hit sample, hit a pad to choose it to record on that one
Set your tempo, bars/quantize, hit sample again to record the pad presses in real time along w/ the metronome until you reach the end of the pattern lengh.
