I just got mine the other day... its the mk2.

It is my most favorite box ever.. I love it more than anything. Its probably not up most of your alleys since you go for the SPs and hiphop with looser timing and stuff..

But for dance beats it is dooope! I am doing kinda tripped out techno and tech/deep house kinda stuff. . its sick! You can loosen it up.. it has swing setting, and also you can sample white space at the start of samples to get them off the quantise points.

Probably mostly only good for live use, not so good for programmed studio beats cos the automation is limited to 2 things at once I think... but with fingers you can automate alot more heh.

Reckon I'm gonna buy another one this week. :D

Gunna be rocking 2 ES-1s, a mixer, a KP3, 2 delay pedals, 2 reverb pedals.
Banzai!

The only downside is the built in effects are limited and they dont have much sampling time.. its kind of the opposite of the SP series in every way.

I still havent bought an sp-404 again either  Maybe I should get another one of them first.. :P I do miss the simplicity of that self-contained box..Hmmm...

i had this one 5 or 6 months ago.
i sold it after 1 month.
i just don't dig it. i think is not flexible as the sp are. for house and techno (maybe dubstep too) is great but that's all. i mean that it has a very good sequencer (better than sp-303 and 404 anyway) but the beats fall everytime in the quarter of this sequencer-in- line. another half good feature is the slice feature: a way to stretch the sample. i thougth it was something like chop and that's way i gave the es-1 mkII a try. but unfortunately you can't assign the slices to pads in the order you want (!!thanx korg). what i didn't like was also the fact that the little light run over you face and you have to run after...it's like an hardware version of fruity loop. better to say: fruity loop is a sofware version of all electribes togheter.
the fx are good, above all the filter. the pitch is dope. if you're most of all in 4/4 (and not breakbeat at all) it's a good machine. but i think that the esx-1 is the real beast at korg.
after the es-1 mkII i bought the sp-303. another story.

anyway sorry, i don't want to disencourage you, but at time i was very disappointed by this machine. also beacuse i begun to keep away from computer exactly with the es-1. maybe i didn't understand this machine globaly or, simply, maybe it wasn't for me.
peace and good soundz!

ps
have you got a myspace or something to hear your music anyway? i'm curious to hear what you're doing!

i love my es-1 (i have the mk I). i had to basically stop using it cuz the sample time was TOTALLY full (its only 90 secs) but i really liked the pitch shift, i prefer the X0X style sequencer (more sp505 than sp404), love the effects, the fact it remembers effect settings after save, the motion capture....all good things.

i'm actually looking for an EA-1 to use live as it can layer up the synth loops and work w/ effects.

i'd be interested to hear what you do w/ the es-1, cartesia, as that sample time limitation is a big fing for me, and it'd be good to hear how other dudes get around that.

i remember this crappy thing...
as you said, memorizing fx (and also the knob movements) it's a good features. maybe it's me against korg :) (but i have a nanokey, look at my equipement).
but, yes, another limited point is, if i remebere well, the loop edit: it has only one-shot type.
i think it's good for techno/house.
peace

i rocked out on one of those at guitar center. its definately a techno thing cause i had a electro beat going within seconds. really fun box, ill probably pick up one or the next version in a few years. as far as the sample times go....its not really a sampler so who cares, just throw some 500 millisecond stabs and one shots on there and you wont run out of space anytime soon

The sampling capabilities make it sound sort of like a MC-505 Plus. Getting the sequencer stuff the MC has, together with the ability to really create your own sounds as well.

I think the MC 505 is a bit more advanced,

you dont really get 'keyboard' parts that you can play pitched up/down on a keyboard with the ES-1, but you can fake it by automating the pitch knob (that does work in semitones)

Like a few of you have said... Due to the nature of techno/etc, the sample limitation isnt really a limitation - because most percussion sounds are very very short.

Hey Fauna, do you know you can install the MK2 OS on the MK1?? It changes the wah effect into an auto-pan delay.

didn't know that. i actually really like the pan knob for placing sounds (tend to not like pan-delay).

i find the automation for semi-tones a little lumpy. that's why i'm finking of an EA-1, but they don't come available as often as they used to, you know?

Yeah... I'm always on the edge of grabbing one myself. It would be nice to have a matching set...

But coming from a baclground of having 'real'/more powerful synths, I dont think I could cope... still. .I dont use much complex synths these days.. just little bleeps n things.

I was thinking about picking up a microkorg XL as it would match my es1mk2 nicely. . but then I saw it has this really ugly looking black plastic 'tray' shaped thing around the bottom of the case.. WTF. It was so beautiful till I noticed that.

I use the korg esx1. It's my most favorite machine ever! Ask if you have any certain questions. I've never used the es1 tho. I make the boom bap style beats on it, NOT LIKE THE 99% of youtube videos out there.

on the esx-1, am i right in thinking you can run two chromatic synth lines, and the other nine are beats (ie: non chromatic)?

i'm not totally clear on it...

yeah.. well not synth, but 2 melodic sample parts.. it also has slice part too.

the main improvement IMO is the exxtra outputs so you can mix things separately, and the better effect routing, better indiv. filters...

As far as samplers go, the ES-1 plays by its own rules, but that’s the fun of it. You can quickly make interesting 4 bar loops, and before you know it you can make great patterns from what you got. Chain it to the other Electribes and you have a great pallet of anything from electro to acoustic. The only caveat is the smart media cards, which will get harder to locate as these get hard to find. Get one soon. I will.
