I am amazed by this unit. It has an easy to use built in drum machine (step sequencer and real time recording) with a very nice 808 kit included. You can also load your own samples (13 seconds) to five kits, even loading recordings from tracks on the BR-864. The effects processor is amazing, especially the compressor. There are four different models including an MXR dyna comp, a DBX 160, and a UREI 1178! The 160 & 1178 make drums bang way more than an SP-303 vinyl comp can.. it's amazing. Why doesn't anyone talk about these things? Why buy an SP-303 for over $200 when you can get one of these for less than $100? Just grab one, load up an 808 kit, put on the DBX 160 comp, squash the hell out of it, and see what I mean. This seriously has a competent step sequencer with patterns you can chain together to form a song.. and you can load your own samples! |

ha, word. I'll just say makes drums bang in a different but equally awesome way. The DBX comp really gives the drums punch. The UREI is a bit boomier. |

Are there pads you can assign the samples to like on the zoom r8 or do you have to assign them from within the LCD/Program screen and sequence strictly from there? I looked at a picture of the br864 and couldn't tell. I did see a picture for a software sequencer for the 864 that looked pretty handy. |

There are buttons beneath the faders that trigger the samples, you can switch banks too. Google the manual, you'll be surprised by all the features it has. |

Yeah, I haven't gotten into it yet because I have other new gear I've been messing with too. But it's all there. Seriously, it'd just take like one cat to show everyone a sick beat made using this portable recorder basically like a mini DAW I guess to give it the cult following it deserves. I'm telling you, my favorite part is the compressor models though.. they're nice |

i tryed to make a beat on this a long time ago and gave up, because you can't really do anything, i loaded a sample loop and some drums, timed out the sample to sequence then slapped my drums in. all that for nothing, and I had to use super subliminal manual reading brain power to hack the deepest levels of this machine, just to make a microwave beat u ca n bearely do anything with, ha, i would use this for recording thats it, cool features, but you will lose your mind hacking it, only to be disapointed, shure would be cool, if you didnt have any sampler, and needed to make emergerncy beats. |
