Yo,

Anyone ever tried this? I sample and sequence with my trusty Mpc 2000 XL.
My signal path is : Turntable>Dj mixer with 3 band eq>SP 303>MPC 2000 XL.
I use the SP303 as an effects unit. I'll dial up a LO-FI setting on the SP and let the sound go thru it.

Yesterday I experimented with 45RPM sampling, so....

Vinyl sped up to 45 RPM > thru Dj Mixer for added eq > thru SP for Lo-FI fx > hits my MPC on wich I mostly sample mono. Then I slow down the sample in the MPC. I believe to hear a much more thicker low end. On kicks I can really tell the difference. Ofcourse the MPC doesn't add aliasing artifacts like a SP1200 would, but that's already kind of added by that Lo-Fi effect in the SP303.

I have a s950, so don't tell me to go and buy a vintage sampler. It's all about having fun with gear.

Was just wondering how to recreate '90's 12 bit boombap flavor or LoFi abstract

I'm not saying it sounds like a SP1200, cos i know it doesn't. That's not the point of my experimentation. I'm just trying to create a raw 12 bit sound that is punchy and thick.

Any thought on this sampling process?

The S950 is not as crunchy as the SP1200. The 303 gives an exaggerated 12 bit crunch, that's why I like it and prefer it above the S950.
I'll def check that method you mentioned.

Thanx

I just checked that topic, and that's 99 % the same method I tried. Still I believe that sampling 45 rpm and slowing down gives it a little bit extra oomph. Maybe my ears are playing tricks on me... I gotta do some more a/b testing.

Finally found a use for the SP303. Left it gathering dust for a while cause I hate sequencing on the thing since it's so primitive. Only things I like about it are it's fx and the way you trim your samples. I prefer trimming by ear over waveform editing anyday.

Well, you won't get Sp1200 type "fairydust" on a MPC, but is does sound more grainy and slightly more dull. After now two days of experimenting I can say that on my MP it works best for bass sounds and especialy kicks. Anything with more high frequencies I'll sample normal speed but with the SP303's Lo-Fi effect for that fairydust.
