I just got this thing, it's pretty fucking cool, SP with keys, but I got a question to any users on here, elaborated here... http://korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/view ... hp?t=68516

Posted it here cos those boards seem pretty dead.

THe problem in a nutshell is that the sampling mode where you chop as you sample by pressing down the keys you want to assign the sample too as it plays, is not as cool as it sounds, because if you don't leave a gap between letting go of one key and pressing down the next one, it doesn't record on to the next key, so there's always a gap between chops, bigger or smaller depending on how fast your fingers are.

If anyone's got a solution, would be much appreciated!

The MS is my go to piece of gear at the moment. I use it with paired with an sp 606. Thhe ms has got some dope effects and a really fast work flow once you figure it out. Its MIDI IN is convenient if you want to hook up some pads, if those keys aren't doing it for you.

Try using the auto next after you tap tempo the selection you are sampling.

This will help the 'auto next' time out your chops until you get quick with the manual chop. Personally I never use the auto next chop feature, I prefer the raw manual chop on the lofi 12khz

i'm just using my MS-1 as a synth, really, dragging sounds over from the pc via USB.

but yr right about the korg forums being dead....so, maybe we should do some info swappin' on here?

Thanks for the reply dude, I'm not using auto next (I haven't actually tried it yet to be honest) I imagine it would be good for drum breaks. But you know how when you're sampling an instrumental section of a tune, there's little bits like maybe a guitar note or a rhodes chord which don't stand out in the wave form so won't get chopped on to their own separate key. I like to chop my shit to bits lol.

How do you manual chop on the microsampler (I'm finding the manual pretty useless), sample the whole sample in gate mode, copy it across all the keys then adjust the start/end points? I'm guessing not cos that sounds very long-winded lol.

Usually I just sample a few seconds of a record as a one shot, then resample what I want to keep using key gate. If you need your second chop to start right where your first chop ended you have to be really quick and accurate with the key gate, you may well be better off using auto next. I don't really use auto next that much but when I have a good sounding record but have no idea what to do with it I just sample a few bars and have auto next chop it up in to quarter or eighths, that gives me at least 16 chops to play with, sometimes I slice them up even more afterwards but a lot of the time I find they just sound dope as they are. If you have something which is really consistent in rhythm it gives really good results, and it's perfect for breakbeats. I guess the "official", or the Korg way to chop is use start/end points or chop up the waveform with the editor software. But I always just resample.

I'm mostly using it as a rompler. The best thing is it's small and light, so if you have any friends with amazing sounding pianos or harps or whatever instruments you can just take it over to their place and sample some notes. You can get some pretty decent results using just the mic it came with. I've only had it a couple of months but so far I've collects dozens of banks of instruments, I'll probably upload a few of the good ones at some point.

I chop on MS just as I do on all my samplers: manual.

Jeez, lotta whining on the Korg forum. Personally, I bought mine so I could play my air organ, glockenspiel, casios etc on ONE keyboard. Touch of reverb and I'm happy!

'manually' means you sample a hunk of audio, then go in after and fine tune the start- and end-points.

Ahh I thought as much, oh well it's not too much bother. If they fixed the keygate thing the workflow would be super slick though

On another note, do you lot reckon the electribe EMX1 would go well with the microsampler? man I'm looking like a korg fan lol. I've got a yamaha cs01 in the post too.

i've had all 3 (emx,esx, micro) - I would go with the ESX over EMX personally.
The EMX is alot of fun but I grew tired of the drum options and the synth is pretty good but kinda plastic-y sounding. The ESX is a pretty sick sampler.

I already got a microsampler (and a computer running a crack of logic if all else fails!) so I think I'm covered on the sampling front.

I'm not really interested in the synth parts, or the drum sample sounds on the EMX, id rather just sample if i'm going for realistic drums and use a dedicated synth for synth parts, i'd wanna use it primarily for synthesizing drum sounds, have yuo tried/had any success with that? Even with the sampled drum sounds surely the effects are enough to fuck with it a bit.

And when you say drum options are limited do you mean preset sounds, or tweakability?
