this is a question for anyone whos used the 303 (or 505) and the 404. is the vinyl sim compression/compression better on the 303 compared to the 404 or are they almost the same? i usually use compression on my drums and bass hits and the shit sounds ill using the 303 and 505 but was wondering about the 404 when using compression? i heard somewhere the 404sx compression sounds wack..

far from wack, its a little different, i think maybe a little stronger, but i have both machines and use them both the same way pretty much, just have to adjust the volumes of your samples more than anything, but i also learned to love the 404 vinyl sim first then after about a year added a 303 to the lab so my opinion might be different from someone who started on the 303, right now i usually run my 404 into the 303 with the vinyl sim on the external source

I make all of my beats in the 404 then run them into my 303 with vinyl fx on to compress it. I just use it as a recorder mostly. it sounds good but i have never done a comparison between the two. I do know the 303 sounds warmer than the 404, that is mostly why I do that recording path. I had the 303 looong before the 404. I now use the 404 because it is so much faster than the 303, with all of the loading times with recording and truncation and resampling. Hope this helps!

so do you use the vinyl sim on the 404 too?? or do you usually use another effect on some/all pads, and then only use vinyl sim comp on the 303??? it depends for me, sometimes i'll put vinyl sim across all the pads on the 404, run it into the 303 and have that vinyl sim on too with the knob turned up only about a quarter on the 303, and like half or so on the 404, and then out of the 303 into my 4 track red hot, and it usually comes out soundin pretty fat, i rip back into the 404, export, and then do my version of mastering in cubase, they have been startin to sound really nice as of recently, lovin this 4 track in my set up

Yes, I do have the 404's vinyl compress on going into the 303, with its vinyl on, but only turned up between 1/4-1/2. Sounds good.

definitely, exactly what i do, always sounds fat, just gotta adjust the input into the 303, although i find the peak meter on the 303 to much more sensitive than the 404's, i usually keep it flashin pretty heavy, as long as its not on consistently, and of course critical listening skills and good ears to judge the quality of the sound
