Might I recommend the small diaphragm RØDE M3? I can run off of either 48V phantom power or 9V battery, has a low battery meter, optional 80Hz bass roll off and more. Check it out here:

Recommended CF card brands

According to the manual, these are the memory cards supported by the 404:

Try loading them into the memory card banks (C through J). The internal banks A abd B only have about 5 minutes time available to them in total, not each. The problem may lie in the card. Try using a different brand, like SanDisk.

Try VirtualDub for editing your videos. It's freeware and has a load of features in it. Make sure your computer has lots of free hard disk space, like on the order of at least 100 gigs free. I highly recommend recording your video without compressing it, especially if you're going to use a USB ...

Sound like at least 2 things must have happened ... 1. it was formatted for MPC usage correctly in an MPC, 2. after that it was formatted on the SP-404?

You did not mess with copying folder structures and all that, right? I always thought the SP removed all other file structures on the card, but ...

I've got an idea that MIGHT help you transfer cards to and from your 404 and MPC without going to the middleman.

1. Format a card on the MPC.
2. Put the card into your PC's card reader.
3. Copy all files into a temporary directory/folder.
4. Put said card into your 404 and format it.
