I borrowed an old MS-1 (1995) last week. It does have this key-off-halfway-click or spike with simple low tones. But that is 25 years ago with max 16 MB.

I'd like to be sure about that.
Have to try in a shop somewhere.

Are there any of you 404 owners who can get hard clicks by releasing a pad or midi halfway a playing sample?

If you end a playing sample halfway by a release of a key on the panel or through midi, you can get a loud click in older samplers. It is not always, so I suppose it happens because on that unlucky key-off moment the wave is not zero or ...
