Re: Grooveboxes

OP-Z: just got one and it’s pretty cool but can’t directly sample unless it’s over USB or a trrs cable splitter that may or may not work with every device. Could not get the 404 to record into the Z.

That’s really unfortunate, I just feel like the OP-Z should be slightly more fully featured for ...

Re: Grooveboxes

The Volcas have never appealed to me, but I also haven't had the chance to play with one yet.

I ended up winning a Pocket Operator PO-33 off ebay for a little over $50, so im excited to check that out! Kinda seems like a tiny 404 which I know for a fact I get along with workflow wise.

Ive also ...

Re: Grooveboxes

The DR-202 is a bit honestly dated. It was meant to be paired with the SP202 to trigger the samples from it. As a drum machine that does bass lines, it does the job. But it isn’t going to give you any pianos, acoustic/electric guitars, pads or synth lines. As long as you have another synth ...

Grooveboxes

I've just sold my Circuit and am kinda in the market for another portable device to pair well with the 404. I didn't get along with the circuit that well, all my tracks seemed to take on a weird electronica vibe I just wasn't feeling.

Current considerations:
- Roland MC-307
- Pocket operator set ...

Taking only L or R from stereo sample

For those old school records where the vocals are hard panned to L or R is there a way to take only that pan with the vocals (strictly using the 404). I have a feeling this is something I'm just gonna have to do on the laptop or unplug an RCA before recording the sample. I tried using the tremolo ...

Re: Mastering!

i by no means have a perfect mix but ive been mastering my tracks inside the 404sx for years now (i know all sp units are a little different but most of these tips should transfer to MOST sp units)

1. start with processing and EQing drums and sample
i usually make the drums bump a little harder ...

Re: Tascam Porta One Ministudio

Probably covering old ground here but you have 4 tracks to work with so i would suggest separating everything into those 4 tracks. (1:Drums, 2:Bass, 3:Leads or vocals, 4: Samples etc.) Not an exact rule but it helps when it comes to mastering and will allow you to mix everything after the fact ...

Mastering!

This has always been a weak point for me especially trying to master inside the 404. If anyone has some wisdom to pass down or just wants to open the discussion im all ears! Mainly I feel like once i try to smooth things out i end up loosing a lot of punchiness and end up muffling things a lot.

Re: SPBB #289 Poll

Same goes for production. I fkn suck at finishing tracks in SP, rely too much on compression / limiter, possibly EQing afterwards, gotta work on that shit. It always turns out to be either muddy, or kinda cold. Can't seem to find a sweet spot there..

Feel this spiritually, it seems like the more ...

Re: SPBB #289

I uploaded a 2nd version because I'm indecisive and can't decide which one really sounds better. I don't expect it to count in the Battle because its over time anyways but if any of y'all feel like comparing the two and giving me feedback it'd be sick!

Original (battle version):

Re: iOS apps to complement SP

Also there is a thread on the forum about the Koala sampler app. I bought that app and it is the closest thing to an sp I’ve ever messed with hardware or software. It’s pretty much a 404sx with wav form editing like 505 606 screen. You can also pitch samples chromatically like the 505 but the 505 ...

Re: SPBB #289

Sorry im new to the battles, just to clear this up does sequencing externally go against the rules? (i like to use my mpc to sequence everything) At any rate im nearly done i can play it on the 404 i just like to be lazy and use sequences (helps with tracking out too)
