I am guessing that your audio settings in Ableton are higher than the 404 can handle natively and there is either dither or sample rate conversion happening which is changing things.

One way to test this is to set Ableton to the same settings as the 404. The specs on Roland's website say 44.1KHz ...

I have this issue with a brand new 404sx that I got for Christmas. I have discovered that the output in the headphones is very clean, but output from the Line Out buzzes horribly as soon as something is displayed on the display. For example, if I play a sample it buzzes/hums. Stop the sample, with ...
