I'm using the PSU that came with the unit. I'll give it a shot with batteries.
When you say faux-contact, you think it might be an issue with the PSU?

Definitely not sleep mode. There are not lights on it when it does this, it shuts off after an extended period of inactivity (not five minutes like Sleep), and I'm unable to get it back on without hitting the power switch off and back on. Sometimes that doesn't work and I have to switch off, unplug ...
