That's weird because i have 2 " 1gb Transcend Compact Flash Card 133x" and they work fine with my og
Maybe a manufacturing defect ?

Do you tried with other card(s) ?
Try to run the 404 in test mode and do the tests (if you can turn on with card in test mode)
