(1st post!): I reckon it's a ground loop/ earth loop - I often get it when I plug in USB on my MPC. Weird for a MIDI cable (by design - MIDI should not do this) but anything is possible: this is live/studio gear after all.
You could try the suggestion of breaking the ground connection somewhere ...
