I restarted my computer and now it works!! I plugged my Y cord from the SP's output into the input next to the headphone jack and now Garageband is picking it up. Easy solution but thanks for the help!

hey I followed your directions to connect my sp to garageband but it says the MIDI is not detected when i check Garageband>Preferences>Audio/MIDI. When I look at the computer system preferences, I can see that the computer is receiving sound through the input next to the headphone jack on the side ...
