[ thequestfortheshortestpossiblesampletimeona404 ]

the thread about the 303's sample reverse reminded me of a somewhat useful glitch I've found on my 404:
if you play a sample in reverse and use the mark button, no matter where you put the first mark, the second time you hit mark it will start looping the shortest possible chunk starting from that ...

I guess substitute makes sense... all it really is is a "soft" pad, really only good for hitting a sample faster than you can physically hit one pad.
SUB could also mean "below" as in below the other pads, a slave pad.

another use for it is for double hits, I think somebody already said that ...

who cares what you sample from? there is no 'wrong' sampling source format...
even the grittiest, nastiest, LoFi-est sample is just as legit as the original when it comes to making beats

yeah, there are a few effects with level knobs that you can use to mute - but that means the mute counts as an effect, canceling out any live effects you were using.
seems like a mute button wouldn't have been too hard to add. do any of the other SPs have one?

pad mute?

is there any way to mute individual pads during pattern playback?
(like to drop out the kick for example)

I've been using the level button and knob 3 but it kills my flow...

flange tails

you can trick the flanger into making some nice tails for snares and hats and such:
Ctrl 1 is depth + res, so turn it waaay up.
Ctrl 2 is rate, so turn it waaaay up too.
Ctrl 3 is balance. ride this knob low, so you can just hear the effect behind the original sample.

tweak to taste.

yeah I know about styleflip, those can be pretty rad

but I was actually asking about the metal piece itself, not vinyl overlays. the metal is all bent and split, I'm just wondering if you can get a replacement for the actual cover piece itself.

has anyone ever successfully contacted Roland for ...

Replacement Faceplate?

Just got my 404 in the mail yesterday, and the metal faceplate is all bent up (and split) near the phones jack. I don't think it will be too hard to bend it back down so I don't cut myself, but I just wondered if Roland or anyone else sells replacement parts such as faceplates?
