Thanks everyone for the info. I got the Sandisk Extreme 2GB for £11 (before I read your recommendation to stay away from them)
I must say it all works OK now - having much fun with the machine now it doesn't drop loads of samples and crackle like hell.

Glitches, crackles pops etc
I've had nothing but trouble recording to CF. First I bought a cheap card on eBay which added lots of glitches to every sample recorded and refused to import any Wav (and don't get me started on the Wav convertor). The SP555 frequently forced me to reformat the card when it had been in a PC card ...
