Yeah. I thought it was going to be perfect for my needs but there was only 1 thing that was a deal breaker for me: tempos dont save with the patterns. This is fine for DJs and people working with loops and external clocks. Its a big bummer because the 555 is perfect in every other way for me.

I have a brand new SP-555 for sale if anyone is interested. Sorry if it is bad form to post it here. I didn't see a marketplace section. $500 includes shipping and i am in Chicago.

I'm fairly sure you are correct. The SP-505 doesn't have a proper MIDI sequencer so you can pretty much only record a pattern sequence with the pads and not MIDI notes. I could be wrong, it has been awhile since i owned the 505.
