I sampled from a Masterpiece Theater rendition of Thumbelina on VHS a while back. The tape itself was cool & very weird. I’m down with VHS tapes bro. I’ve got a couple boxes of tapes to go through in the garage & started in on them a couple months ago. I’m goin hard on the vinyl now though.

There's some crazy shit you can do with VCR's. Record your sample to a VHS cassette, then take off the cover of the VCR and take a pen or a marker and gently tug on the tape before it runs through the play head for some manual warbling LFO shit. Or wiggle the head while it's playing. That shit sounds crazier than any SP vinyl sim.

I'm still kicking myself in the ass for throwing out 2 VCR's and a couple boxes of VHS's 5 years ago, after discovering this. I got some weird fetish for destroying old electronics.

Haha! I still have 2 CRT TV's in my attic. They are a bitch to dispose of. You can't give them away.

I can't find the original video I saw either, here 2 of them though.

Not too hard to do. VCR's usually just have a few screws and the metal top will slide off like a computer case. I would use something non-conductive to probe around in there since it will be plugged in, take note of where the power supply is. I wouldn't rest your arm on that thing. The smaller wires are probably inverted down to DC current. You might take risk of eventually wearing the motor out if you go too hard on it, but for $5-10 bucks at a thrift shop I think it's totally worth it.

It's funny on youtube people are calling these things VHS video players/recorders, they are called (V)ideo (C)assette (R)ecorders. It's how we used to steal movies off of cable TV before the internet and Tivo days.

These are the tapes I just can't give away. I used to watch the fuck out of these before we had internet and youtube showing every scratch technique.
And yes that is the Original Invisible Scratch Pickles "Toiret for Godzirra".

^ Haha! Those are some good DMC years. 1997 got that kid A-Trak. He's like 15, but looks like he's 11 years old and whoops everyone's ass.

I probably wore that 1997 tape out, it did have so many great sets on it. But
that Kid put the whole world to shame that year.

No joke! That was a good one. Those are some collectors items. Man, turntablism... what happened? Now cats argue over basic looped up beats. Back then you couldn't say nothing to about a DJ, that could manipulate 2 records into a live beat while scratching the shit outta of them at the same time, other than, "Wow?!"

You could probably get what you paid for those, if the right person came along.

Yeah I can't get rid of those, my old VHS asian porn, or my card magic tapes (yeah I said it I collect card magic, tapes and books and I don't give a fuck!!).
I think I even have some of the old Guitar Center Battle Tapes somewhere.

I've realized that shit like that just isn't worth letting go of. I told myself I would get rid of my records before I ever moved them again and I couldn't do it. This is only about half of them that I have still been trying to find the time to get put away.
Is a damn mess down there!!

Maybe when I get my shit together I'll post up a SP turntablism battle. I'm sure there are some scratchers in here.

What value do yall place on VHS as a medium? Do you collect movies that ain't released elsewhere or is it just part of a 90s fetish?

videos produced before the latest 90s/00s were mastered in analog format. recorded on VHS. cartoons were hand drawn and recorded on VHS. the warmth of the color and the beauty of the grain. some people say that tape/film can capture the soul of the photographed/filmed

i think it's funny you said 90s fetish. my favorite tape is from 1971

What's your favourite tape, g? I think when people talk about capturing the soul like that, its about what shits recorded on, not distributed on, no? oldschool mediums definitely have value, not intrinsically tho. Shit's not cooler just because it's stored on vhs bro.
