Ok, so 2-3 people say Music Man.

so I narrowed it down to two options...

Sterling by Music Man:
https://www.long-mcquade.com/100606/Gui ... nburst.htm

Fender FSR Deluxe:
https://www.long-mcquade.com/64953/Guit ... atural.htm

How would you compare the two of these?

I almost gave up on bass guitar today lol my fingers are small and can't even stretch my fingers to play the first four frets to the nut.

It would have to be the Fender Jazz bass for me personally thesisDRS.

I've played both the Jazz and Music Man models in the past and the Music Man is a rock solid instrument with a big sound but the neck shape and the overall feel of the Jazz bass is perfect for me and a lot of that just comes down to how the bass responds in the upper register which I think is just as important to how good the bottom end sounds but again that just comes down to a personal preference so don't let that influence you dude ! .. :D

well to be completely honest... I want the fender.
it's a mexican made fender but a fender nonetheless.
the fact I can get it for $699 used but still in good condition.
the ash body and natural wood finish.

pretty much got me hooked....

one problem though...

i'm broke from buying the moog sub phatty

I'd buy an old japanese copy like a Tokai or Greco if I had 700 bucks for a Jazz. I myself am a proud owner of a japanese '62 reissue Precision. Love it to bits.

Hell no, most MIM Fenders I've played have been mediocre. All lawsuit copies have been fantastic. Obviously you should try before you buy, a mate of mine stumbled on a Squier Jazz some years ago and that one blows a lot of higher end basses out of the water for example.

Got to admit that the Tokai's from the mid 1980's were extremely well made instruments and if I'm being brutally honest the higher end models of the Tokai 'lawsuit' axes were built to a spec which actually surpassed the quality of a lot of the Fender and Gibson's that they were copying.

I had a Tokai Telecaster for several years which was my main electric for live work and this is at a time when I also owned a Gibson SG and a 1969 Les Paul Deluxe hehe but the Tokai just sounded better in my opinion and especially for use on stage.

I almost bought myself a really nice sounding Tokai acoustic last year which was based on the design of the Gibson J 200 with gold plated hardware..real nice..the guy selling it only wanted £250 for the guitar but I had to pass in the end as I already have several nice acoustics here and I'm also in the process of building a couple of single cone resonator guitars of my own so I couldn't really justify the purchase of yet another acoustic unfortunately.

Yeah ,theres absolutely nothing wrong with using cheaper manufactured models of guitars and basses as long as you're happy with the overall sound, performance and feel of the instrument.

There's a ton of misconceptions when it comes down to purchasing guitars in my opinion.

Just because a guitar costs more doesn't always necessarily mean it's any good, just as a cheaper guitar isn't always a piece of junk. Remember that at one point in time even Gibson guitars were cheaper than average and considered to be trash. Epiphone, which ironically is now a lower priced copy brand, was once the market leader and has made some of the most sought-after guitars in the world. And as far as guitar 'heroes' go, Queen's Brian May has used a homemade guitar since the late '60s that he and his father built from a fireplace mantel and his mother's knitting needles, while Green Day frontman Billie Jo Armstrong favours his much loved main axe which is a complete Fender knockoff. Those two guys mentioned are definitely not the sort of players I'd listen to personally but they do, in fairness, represent a good example of what I'm talking about. Many lower priced brands of guitar manufacturers have at least the occasional shining example, and even the best brands produce a dud now and then.

Evaluating the quality of any guitar or bass means looking at individual components that make up the instrument—the body and neck, tuners, frets, pickups, electronics and hardware. It's a lot like buying a new car, the best way to find out what features and feel you like is to "test drive" the instrument—play as many guitars as you can get your hands on, in all price ranges. Ultimately, it will all come down to the way the guitar sounds to you and how it feels in your hands. You can't measure the worth of an instrument in dollars and cents alone.i think that the best thing to listen out for is the guitar that speaks to you.

Sometimes it's not all about the newest and bestest. Sometimes it's the guitar's 'mojo' that renders it priceless.Look at those beat up shitty looking things that Seasick Steve performs with that sound fucking amazing as another great example.

So for sure, old, and even some cheaper used guitars with a little history behind them can have years of experience infused into their wood and will reflect that experience in the sounds they'll project.
