Good old thread to bump!

Here's another one. Possible overlap.

For SP beats I use the wide and warm mastering preset in Ableton.Sometimes I also go over to Reason and use the the tape effect thing(forget what its called)which also has presets for VHS,vinyl, etc. If I want a lot of grit I might record it back and forth from cassette before doing any of the above though. Also I love some of the preset sounds in garage band as far as sampling sources goes and any kind of meditation or ambient music has always been good for sample sources because the percussion is either non existent or very soft.

I have a small battery powered desktop Marshall guitar amplifier I sometimes use which is really nice for sending samples through from a Sony Walkman or a cd player into the SP-404 .

I use it mostly with a clean signal and apply any FX to the sample from the 404's internal FX but the Marshall also has a second gain channel which is great for adding extra filth if its needed.I also sometimes use the little amp with a vintage MXR Phase 90 stompbox rigged up to it and have gotten some really nice sounding effected samples that way.

Those Marshall amps are cheap as chips btw, the last one I saw was only £10 so definitely an extra bit of kit anyone can afford to buy and pretty useful too.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that you can actually play a guitar through it too !

Heres a demo I made last week which uses the Marshall to process the chopped up vocal and guitar samples in the track if anyone wants to listen.

When im looking for good drums to throw over a loop, I just have the loop play on the 404 while I play drums over it, that way I can hear instantly if it meshes all nice with the rest of the track.

1. I'll listen to the final mix on every thing that will play music like various cars, tvs, boomboxes, cell phones, monitors, & headphones.
2. I'll also listen to the final mix at the lowest volumes possible and what I want to hear is everything. If I only hear 1 particular element like drums, guitars, keys, horns, etc. then I re-adjust the levels.

i use my SP-606 in Linux. (UbuntuStudio 16.04LTS with the KX Studio Repo's)

Sunvox has become my replacement for the P606 software that came with the SP. synths to work with, that you can play on the pads, and ext seq capture to a pad is super helpful.

i use Ardour with the 606's ext sequence sampling mode for "quick chop".
i just tell the SP-606 to grab a beat off Ardour's timeline and put it on a pad and the cursor moves to the next beat on the timeline, ready for the next pad. like butter.

I'll use my Numark CDX just like the Ardour for chopping as well.

i use the hydrogen drum machine for 16 level type sequencing.

Between my 606 and my laptop i'm good!!

i can make music with either machine, without involving the other but together its so easy and fun.
