So after a long absence I've been trying to get involved on this forum again and beatmaking in general. Therefore I need an SP again! Having had the 303 and 404SX I'm looking for more polyphony, memory and processing time than a 303 so preferably a 404, perhaps a 555 and even considering the 404SX again.

But this time chasing a certain sound is my lowest priority and I'm wondering if my way of working can be achieved with these three options, I just want an damn SP again, stick with it and learn it inside out untill it dies on me or instead of selling it buy a companion.

Anyway, my way of working with the 303 (boy did I love that thing though) was something like this:

I got some drums on certain pads and record a pattern by resampling and record a pattern and after that's done adjusting it's end point so it will loop. On some other pads I'd have my sample and do the same thing though I'm resampling the drum pattern and resample the samples on top of it. Same thing for bass etc etc etc. Eventually I would use the pads as patterns and then sequence it by recording a track pad by pad.

I've tried doing some research and I've read stuff like "back-up then resampling" (something like that) or stuff like certain "workarounds" or whatever it's a little too vague for me to answer my question..

Also is the timestretching (adjusting the BPM) the same on all SP's? I'll share a trick I used to do; I always adjusted the bpm 1 or 2 bpms lower or higher to my samples then filter the bass so it gets a little warbled (is that even a word lol). Gotta stay using that technique!

And last but not least does the 555 sound like the 404? I've read somewhere that the 555 also compresses its sound so I was wondering if that was like the 404.

Cheers guys and I hope to see y'all in the arena soon!

welcome back rip!

i've mainly been messing with the 555 recently coming from a 404sx/303 setup and I've got no qualms. It'a like a 404xl heh. the 16 pad setup is way nicer for chopping and the loop capture mode makes playing live a bit more entertaining if you go that route. takes CF cards and no batteries, which is a slight set back and the polyphony is the same during resample unfortunately (2 stereo/4 mono).

i've never worked with a 404og but I'd say it sounds the same as the 404sx in terms of sampling rates etc. but the effects are fairly different.
if you like the 303's vinyl sim then the 555's comp is identical to my ears with side by side comparisons.

i still have all 3 and i still use the 303 regularly but i hardly ever touch the 404sx now to be honest, unless I had to hit the road.

Thanks alot for the insight, Alnitak! Despite you provided some useful stuff, I got me a 404 OG now. Though if I'm ever gonna get a companion for it I'll look into the 555.

I highly recommend the purchase if you've got the cash spare :D I miss my OG, the SX is useful but it just doesn't seem to have the same mojo to me personally
