been digging for awhile and I have so much that I cant find the record I want in a moments notice. I want to sort them but I'm not sure how to best do it.
Should I do it by genre or by the contents? Or are there better ways to sort records? Please let me know.

I group my records depending on how much I like them and alphabetize the individual groups. For example I have a crate of all my favorite stuff that I listen to/sample on a regular basis, then another that's stuff that I like enough to keep but don't get at too often, then another junk stack that's stuff that I just get to sample or stuff that I think sucks and intend to get rid of. I alphabetize each crate so I can find what I want easily. I break it down further than that too but hopefully that's enough info to see what I mean and maybe spark some ideas that'll work for you

record store style always worked for me:
sort by genre then alphabetize based on artist name

i dont have a massive vinyl collection tho, just a few crates
how many records are you working with?

7 crates right now, only got to listening to 3 crates of it so far, but I dont have much room so I cant get much more than 4 more crates im guessing. Im already sorting stuff out in categories, have a crate for the really weird stuff I find like a sound effects record or one that has morse code on it.
Another for big band or instrumental albums with no singing. Not sure I have enough right now to do by genre but just alphabetizing it all and sorting out the standout stuff is working for me right now.

+1 on sorting by genre and alphabetizing by artist name.

If you've not got enough of one genre to allocate a whole crate to, then you could put in cardboard separators with genre names like they do in record stores and have two (or more) genres in one crate.

I'm only working with about 3 1/2 crates of records. 1 crate is all techno/breaks/house or whatever. The rest are everything from Herb Albert Tijuana Brass Band to sound effects records, children's records, a few funk records, a few disco 12" cuts, and some odds & sodds I picked up for cheap at thrift stores. One crate is propping up my tv, so I haven't really bothered to lift it off and have a peek what I put in there.

My cousin had some nice IKEA record crates, and I'd love to get those probably at some point, but I didn't ask him what they cost. Not too terribly important for now, but if I had one, there'd be a spot for records, and a spot for equipment.

If at some point I should buy more cheap records, I'll definitely need some way to organize them all.

Dick: I guess it looks as if you're reorganizing your records. What is this though? Chronological?
Rob: No...
Dick: Not alphabetical...
Rob: Nope...
Dick: What?
Rob: Autobiographical.
Dick: No fucking way.

Yo thanks for all the replys yo. Just Alphabetizing it makes it way easier to find what I need, also I forgot the password to my other account so I am I guess. Also, has anybody really mainly sampled from live concert records? I just got a Don Ho Live in Hawaii and that shit is fucking filled with that good stuff, and the music isint too bad sounding either, gives it a more loose sound than conventional recordings.
