Hey guys, first post after getting my first SP 404 SX a few weeks ago. Here are a few questions I have...

1) Can you run the metronome while resampling? Is there any way to be sure of the tempo of your resample? I keep chopping a drum break up perfectly, trying to resample with effects, and ruining the chop.

2) Can you listen to the beat while recording something via the mic or external input like a synth? Its seems counter intuitive to record something with being able to play it over the beat.

3) Can you run the external input into the SP like a synth, using the SP as an live effects processing unit, while also triggering samples off the SP?

4) Can you pan individual samples in the stereo field? (not the tremolo pan effect, but just pan them and leave them there)

I think those are all the specific questions I have, but I also have a more general question. I love my SP and its been really fun using it so far, but I come from producing on computers, and I'm pretty damn good with Ableton; in a word, I find the SP extremely limiting. I knew it would be from the start, but I'm having trouble figuring out how artists who I know use the SP make the sounds they make on it. I bought the SP because my favorite artist, TEEBS (Brainfeeder), uses it. Based on interviews, he uses exclusively his SP and sequences on fruity loops. I can't seem to grasp how he makes some of his sounds on the SP. My question is, to those of you who know the SP well, listening to a TEEBS track, can you tell how much of the track - the sound design - is done on the SP? Can you guess as to what the workflow is? I'm starting to think he just uses the SP minimally and for live shows, and does most sound design, sequencing, etc. in FL. Here's a TEEBS track - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu8sQgSHjPo

I'm pretty new to the sx too, but the answer to number 3 is yes, and number 4 is no.

Also Teebs most likely resamples different parts of a beat as he adds to it, and then sequences them on the computer. Sampling is an art, and it does take time to get good at it. Also, definitely check out the thread about the Dakim technique, as it is really good for coming up with good shit on the spot.

Oh, and I can't recall the answer to number 2 because I don't have mine here with me. I think you can though. Same goes fro question 1, hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in

I can't remember what else it does, but if you hold it down you can assign an effect to multiple pads. Also you can preset the effect parameters with it I think, but I haven't fucked with that at all.

1. no
2. no
3. yes
4. no

the remain button also shows you the remaining sample time in minutes on the Display and the current battery Status.

won't be a dickhead yo, but it's really more than worth a look --> http://roland.com/support/article/?q=manuals&p=SP-404SX&id=14997200

Thank you, one last question that I can't find in the manual... I've been fucking with the Dakim delay trick to great effect, the only question I have is an you change the BPM of the delay? As in, can I change the length of the loop once I have a delay loop going?

Not that I know of. However, you could sample what you got, and then fuck with the bpm on the new sample.

By the way, I got tired of the short delay time on the sp so I hooked mine up to a delay pedal (that has a looper built in) and im finding much more crazy results with the longer delay time. Also, a looper is a samplers best friend.

Yes you can, make sure "ext source" is the active pad (by pressing it, if it is already alight, press it off and on quickly), now you can press the bpm button and change the BPM like you would on a sample.

BTW, max delay time on 404SX is 2 seconds, but on the 505 it is 6 seconds ;D

Loopers are cool too but they usually lack the feedback control to erase parts of your loop live (my looper has resampling on the fly so I can imitate this with it´s volume pedal while resampling, but it´s not as immediate as on the sampler with the delay effect)

Loopers also provide a way to keep "resampling" your beat (actually overdubbing on the looper) while keeping the parts separate on the SP.. so yeah I agree loopers are a good friend to samplers like SPs.
