Does anyone here make dance music on their SP?

If so how far are you able to push it?

I made something on pattern mode that's flawed but okay-ish. I'll upload it later today. I couldn't find a former thread about building dance music on the SP so I'm curious.

It's probably easy enough. Hook your sp up to your dj setup, slap on some old school house/techno/d'n'b/trance/trip hop wax/cd's or whatever, sample what stands out, use a bit of compression, low pass filtering, and you're there. Don't be fooled because most people use their sp's for hip hop. The sp's are great devices for making a beat to ignite the dancefloor! If you already have a synth/drum machine, then you can use the sp as a effects unit or to mangle samples you make yourself. It's up to you to decide....

Made this a few weeks ago. Looping the drum sample and playing everything in the pattern mode.

I had put it on private but anyone with a link should have been able to see it. Not sure how soundcloud wants to do it these days. Either way. Try again.

Tune's not bad as an example, do you remember any of the 404SX's preset patterns? Nothin' but dance, mang.

Dance music on the SP's as easy to do as hip hop on the SP, 'spose a lot of what I've done comes kinda close to being dance music in some weird way. Just gotta know what you want to acheive with the tune. Did this with 3 samples a while back:
One For Your City ->

Def use the pattern sequencer rather than the resample method. Also be prepared to do some annoying multitracker workarounds on the 404. Generally speaking dance music genres are better suited to multitracking rather than the SP's recording everything at once style. The (most effective) way I've multitracked in the 404 is:
- get all patterns set up on the editor
- note all sample volumes, settings, FX you're gonna use etc before recording
- go back to the samples & then turn the volume down to zero on what you don't want to record on each pass (ie- 1st take: all drums minus kicks, 2nd take only kicks, 3rd take: bass, 4th take: lead synth etc)
- mix down in your tape deck/DAW/Audacity/potato

^That might suck the first time you do it, but it'll leave you with a lot of flexibility to play with FX on each take. Filters are especially important, never forgot to low pass filter the shit out of everything to sound French.

Yeah I actually dude use about 5 patterns for it. The drums I forgot if I sampled or made them...

Up until now I always thought the 404s presets were random... Time to find my booklet!

id probably use the sequencer rather than the re-sample method if i was making EDM on an sp.

I'd use an external sequencer midi'd to the SP if I was serous about EDM. The 404 handles midi really well if you're just triggering sounds from another sequencer.

on the 404 its basically impossible to make anything remotely exciting. it will likely sound like a child made it too cause you just cant get complexity in the drums. throw in the polyphony issue too...

on the sp555 however its a different story! i just got one recently and it has certain features that just make it so much more useable than the 404.

for a start the loop capture function means you can resample patterns on the sequencer incredibly easily. it means you can record synths in on their own while you play a pattern too... fucking awesome

the pads are soooo much better than on the 404 (than my OG old boy anyway) which makes all the difference in the world as far as im concerned, especially when using the sequencer, you get it right every time. might not be a problem for others i think my 404 pads are fucked but its hard at tempos of 140 and above

velocity sensitivity for hats means you dont sound amateur as fuck too

even things like turning on the metronome whenever you want so you can match your sample to the tempo and play things to the metronome... more helpful than you can imagine

when you resample a sequence to one pad and you want to record it back into the sequencer you just hold it down longer than one cycle of the pattern and it means theres no gap at the end of the loop... saves soo much time and frustration

the cons are that if you want to just record the outputs for a finished track rather than record out the separate bits and mix then its hard to get a consistent sound... really hard

nobody asked for this breakdown but i was just so surprised with the 555, i thought it was just a 404 with more pads and effects but its so much more. here are a few dance tracks i made if anybody is intersted:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=23119

404 used a bit too sometimes for effects or with midi link

Digging your tunes, Nosmo. Low key oldschool house vibes.

As I've started playing with the SP-505 more I am finding myself wanting to make dub techno with it. The 4-track sequencer is great for dropping elements in and out and the FX select is really straight-forward and utilizes the screen well so I don't forget what effect is on and what patterns it's set to. The delay is nice and crunchy and makes a good dubby kind of delay. Plus it's got MIDI out so it could make a master sequencer for a slaved 404 or 303 or synth or drum machine or...
