It seems to take out a lot of the lows. Is there any way around that?

Probably not, but perhaps you can try boosting the bass or boosting the highs first using Isolator or compressor effects?

Or use the old mixing technique of 'layering' - play the original sample at the same time as the effected one. Eq both so the work together. You get the lofi effect plus the bass from the original 8)
