Hey welcome aboard boss!

There's a couple of ways you can chop. Pad 16's chop function can be adjusted with the value dial. The 'Chop Level' on the screen denotes how fine the chopping will be.

I'm pretty sure it looks for volume peaks and chops according to those, so the higher the chop level, the lower the thresh hold for a volume peak to chop to. Does that explain it clearly?

It helps to use Pad 14's Sample Loop Edit to define start & end points of the sample before chopping.

Alternatively, if the chop function doesn't capture what you want it to, copy the sample across the 16 pads & then use the sample loop edit to break it down to 16ths manually. This isn't quick, but it is accurate. It also helps to have a calculator handy to break the sample's length down to 16ths so you can jump to chop points quicker.

Give us a yell if none of that makes sense too.

could you explain a bit more about how you use a calculator? i think i understand how it would work in practice, but dont really get what numbers i should be using and what i should do with them... thanks in advance

Another tip is to use the compressor effect while sampling(be gentle in settings cause that effect is a bit rough) so 606 can find the "peaks" more easy in autochop....
Or you can try resampling the same loop with compressor effect and see if it helped...

Yeah for sure! Sorry, not sure if this is too long winded but here goes:

Crop a sample so it loops evenly, then open it up in the sample loop edit. For instance the loop plays for a duration of 5440976 (check the end point's value).

Next, figure out how long the sample plays for. One bar? Two bars? Etc?

Then figure out how long you want each chop to be. Quarter notes? Eighths?

Divide the loop's duration by the number of the intended chops. For instance a 2 bar chopped to quarters is:
5440976 / 8 = 680122

Therefore each chops duration should be 680122. Remember that. Now copy the original loop onto 8 pads.

Now to measure that chop duration out to each pad:
Chop 1 with start-end values:
0-680122
Chop 2
680122-1360244
Chop 3
1360244-2040366
...
etc

Catch is that will be very rigid. If your loop has a little swing to it, go ahead & alter the start/end points so each chop plays smoothly & sounds right to your ear. Then crop it & you're all set. It also helps to set each of the chops to the same mute group.

Does that help or make sense?

^I know I've posted this method somewhere else on these forums but couldn't find it.

edit:
Korakios' method of adding compression sounds good too if this one's too much hassle.

the number 8 comes from 2*4(quarter)?So if we had 4 bar and 1/16 it would be 4*16,right? :)

Another method, to manual chopping on the 606, is to copy a single sample to several pads via Clipboard. Then adjust the start and end points. Better and quicker than Resampling, which there is a slight loss in sound.
