these forums taught me so much about using my SP's.

but there still so much that is not common knowledge.

so I would like to start pushing the envelope with what
I would might find most helpful.

software integration.

I know most just say go to kinetic2 but I’ve heard
promising things about Project 5 integration, Geist
integration ect...

so I’ll install and try to see what works best and how.

watch this space.....

P606 is the little brother to Kinetic2. Kinetic2 is the little
brother to Project 5. I’ve heard that Project 5 was like a
cross between Sonar and Reason.

its dead now but copy’s of it still float the underweds.

Geist is the Big brother of Guru from FXspantion. kind
of a software mpc. full integration would require the
use of Bome's midi translator. which I don't like but with
bome's you can get the pads on the 606 to light-up when
you strike them. :D

since I’m in Linux I’ve been using the Hydrogen drum
machine. I grab samples in audacity then chop them in
Shuriken, then use shuriken to save the chops as
Hydrogen drum kit. I can then use Hydrogen as a MPC
60 tracking out everything in ardour4.

these should be interesting things too play with and
I hope to give out some good info as well as learn a
lot.

I bought a few cameras & tripods, installed screen cap & vid
editing software so expect some vids along the way.

So I went to bed last night after making a beat.
my shoulders and back where hurting 'cause i was bent over the 606 so long.

I kept thinking to myself how much "I love my 606 but i wish it where easier to chop phrases on" I mean the 505 is easier to chop on! but I resist using it since it doesn't have cut groups.

I fell in to dreamland thinking about how all the sp's have different talents. when I woke-up I was in shock! i had never considered what the combination of ability’s in the 606 meant for chopping. i turned on my equipment and tested out my new dream theory and it worked!!! the 606 is the easiest sp too chop on by far. god i love it!!!

the 606 was made to work with external gear, it was also made to work with software. not realizing/utilizing that is working against it's strengths.

the 606 has 2 efx engines + a mastering engine which make it a uniquely powerful SP on it's own (ultimately the 2 efx engines combine to make a synth) that power makes people want to use it on it's own. but that's a mistake.

the 555, which came after the 606, has that "loop capture" ability.
"why didn't my 606 have that"
I would often think jealously.
"all I have is this "ext seq sampling"
and that's dead since the software it was intended for is dead" but the "ext seq sampling" will sample the seq of any gear the 606 can "slave".

I’ll often sample drum or bass sequences I’ve made on my sp-505 to it. the 606 will tell the 505 to play it's seq at "this bpm" for "that many beats" then record that to a pad for perfect looping. I do the same thing with The Hydrogen Drum Machine on my Ubuntu-Studio laptop.

none of that would help me chop with it thought, chopping is the 606's biggest weakness, I couldn't ext seq sample a turntable.

what my dream reminded of was that a seq is just a series of events over time ("this bpm" for "that many beats").

i opened ardour (an open source protools clone) with something i wanted to chop, then i slaved ardour to my 606. I setup the ext seq sampling for the bpm of the song and to record "1" beat. I then moved the play-head of ardour to the section I wanted sampled and started the ext seq capture. the play-head moved one beat and it was recorded to a pad. the play-head had moved on its own to the beginning of the second beat so all I had to do was press a button to get the capture going for the next pad. basically, all I have to do is press a button 16 times to chop a loop.

in ardour i only have to set the play-head once, it stops at the end of the measure and will do the same at each subsequent capture. I'm just hitting sample and catching the next beat.

plug the 606 into the mmc port of ardour when making your connections in JACK. and you too can have a seamless chopping experience.

with external seq sampling you can tell an audio editor like ardour to put 1-16 beats of it's time-line on a pad.

where ever the play-head stops, it stays, so all you have to do is press ext seq sampling again and you can fill the next pad with the next portion of audio on the time-line.

it's effortless chopping!!

you can do this to any device with a sequencer that the 606 can slave, hardware or software.

software, however, will have the ability to time-stretch your audio. something that doesn't work well, if at all, on the SP-606.

I've been using software to get over the 606's limitations.
sometimes I'll use the hydrogen drum machine to pitch a sample 16 levels then I'll make a sequence of it, once done I'll use the ext seq sampling to grab the sequence from hydrogen.

but i would grab the whole sequence.

now i realize i can tell external gear to give me portions of the sequence and spread them out among the pads.

it's too easy!

I've midi controlled geist with the 606, and I've resampled Geist's output with the 606.
But never done what you're describing, I don't think..
It is awesome to use with any software due to its USB midi.
I used to be pissed they took away the pitch banks the 505 has. But if you're sampling software phrases, it's not a dealbreaker.

well, i just bought a Numark CDX turntable, it has midi in/out dins, responds to time clock start/stop and has beat matching.

sampling with my 606 should become effortless with that turntable.
