The single oscillator synth built into the 606 seems a little limited when you first use it. I'm talking about the pad synth btw, not the d-beam synth..

However, you can get a whole lot more from the synth with a bit of thought, layering and careful application of FX.

First, off, I had the 606 three years before I found the 'sub' page on the Oscillator effect....

To access the sub page, you press [func] + [F2]; this give you access to dozens of extra parameters - this alone makes the synth more powerful. But that's just the start..

After you've made a sound you like, you need to sample it so that you can apply effects and use it with the sequencer. To do this just hit [sample] and choose a pad to put the sound on, then play the pads from 1 to 16 to create a multisample of that synth sound. Then chop it across the 16 pads. easy (you could sample each note to each pad, but autochopping save a lot of time).

Now you can hear you synth sound with FX, and sequence it. But it gets better yet...

Turn the synth back on [MFX1 - 44] + [MFX2 - 45]..You'll notice that the first of the two synth FX [no. 44, oscillator pad], had a 'direct>effect' knob [ctrl 3]. Turn this so that the sample plays AS WELL as the synth. WOW - a two oscillator synth!! You can do this as many times as you like - you could make a 50 oscillator synth if you wished. Remember to use the tuning to good effect to make 'phat' sounds. Rockin 8)

You can, of course, use other synths that you have sampled as well, mixed with the onboard synth, for even greater timbral variety.

sounds sick
that's how you want your synthesis to be too, hands on construction of layered sounds

i bet you were  when you found that sub page

i use the subsonic effect on the 404 to get a 'synth foundation', but you always end up with a similar sounding sine wave (which then gets MFX'd into oblivion). it's a fat sine tho

606 man! thanks a lot!
I knew about all these knobs in oscillator effect but didn't use it at all, until i read your thread! thanks a lot!
now i don't need an external synth coz the built one is so versatile!!!!

the onlly question is---how should i sample it?

my way is - pressing each note then muting MFX, pressing another note, switchin\ on MFX and so on--till i get all 16 notes on 1 pad
then i just automatically cut it - is it what you've been talkin about?

when i tried just pressing Synth pads and sampling into another pad, SP couldn't cut that sample into 16 parts afterwards--it recognised the 16 notes sample as one (probably due to synth's continious sounding)

so i did it my way/

anyway--thanks a lot!!!!!

oh and synth sounds continuously - is there any way to make it sound not continiously? (besides sampling and cutting)

thanks!

When you are sampling the synth sound, press each pad slowly with a good second or so gap in between each note. Then the autochopper won't get confused

Obviously I cant draw a waveform on here, but what you want instead of

SoundSoundSoundSoundSound ....

is:

Sound Gap Sound Gap Sound Gap Sound ...

The autochopper will see the gaps and use them as mark points.

There are other ways around this if you get stuck :D

Use the Oscillator (fx 45) with the enveloper (fx 44)

I'm new here but have been rockin a 606 for about a year and a half now. How do you use the synth with pads rather than the Dbeam?

sorry if this is a stupid question.

It should have worked for you as I'm doing it right now....

i think the reason ur hearing the synth after you've recorded your sample because u probably still have the effect on... turn it off? also keep in mind that everytime you record a sample, it is automatically in gate so u gotta hold the button down to hear the whole thing
