I just got a 512 MB Roland memory card for my SP606. For some reason I thought you would be able to take advantage of the increased sampling time by simply recording samples through the line in, but do you have to have a USB card reader to import the samples to the memory card and then into the machine? Same goes for exporting

606 has a usb mode for acting like a cf card reader. It's very slow but you don't have to buy extra cf card reader.

Yeah, because its USB 1.0 but does the job.

Maybe to keep things in line with the very slow conversion from .wav to the native SP-606 format ?! 8)

This slow processing is a slight dissapointment, but I was warned before by the manual that it takes more than twice the running-length of .wav-files....

Apart from the card-reading stuff, I guess your original question was if one can directly record samples
on the CF-card ?

I haven't tried so yet, but assume this is possible. Can't remember anything in the manual that you can only
sample to the first 8 banks.

Bye

Okay so you CAN record directly into the memory card banks. But can someone outline the process for exporting files from the 606 to a computer? Keep in mind that I don't have the P606 software as it's for windows only and I'm on a Macbook. I do have a driver installed but I don't see any way to export without a card reader. Help please :D

Yeah its easy. This may be a bunch of steps, but its really straightforward & I'm telling you EVERYTHING with this:

1, connect a USB cable to your Mac & 606*
2, press 'Menu'
3, scroll down the list to option '5: USB Mass Storage' & hit enter
4, your 606 will establish the connection with the Mac
5, copy the files into the new drive (called 'fuguefat' or something like that)
6, disconnect from the Mac**
7, from the default pattern or song screen, select the pad bank you want to copy to
8, press FUNC+pad 10 (card utility)
9, select 'File Import'
10, use the up & down arrows to pic the files you dragged across
11, press the pad you want to copy to (unlit pads are empty)
12, press F3 to copy to that pad

Repeat steps 8 through 12 as necessary.

*As obvious as step 1 is, I've forgetten to do that more than once & wondered why the two aren't talking.

**Remember to the Mac version of the PC 'safely remove hardware' routine and then disconnect the SP with the F3 button BEFORE disconnecting the cable. You can cheat this by just ripping out the cable but the SP & Mac don't like it & in time it can cause glitches.

*EDIT* Just realised you want to EXPORT, not IMPORT... Crap!

OK round 2:
1, connect 606 & Mac via USB
2, select your pad bank
3, FUNC+pad 10, press the pad to export, then F3
4, press 'Menu'
5, select 'USB Mass Storage' & press enter
6, open 'fuguefat' (or similar), drag the file to your location (the file will be named pad something like I01_01- meaning internal memory, pad bank one, pad one)
7, disconnect as usual

Repeat steps 2 & 3 as necessary.

Note that if you set up file directories in the SP & memory card the SP won't be able to reach them via its own operating system, but they will take up memory.
