i'm thinking about getting a 606 but apparently the software is not compatible with windows 7. can it be used like say a 505 without the software or are you ****** without it? i had an sp-303 and loved it but dumped it off for 75 bucks because the line-outs were busted. need a new SP and having a hard time deciding.

the no upgrade win7 thing is a s**t from roland, 'cause for me the sp606 was conceived to fully works with a pc.
but also without a pc it defends itself worthily.
if your workflow is just chop and seq, ther's no problems with it.
if you need real pitch, then there are troubles. but if you use softs to do that you can still use the 606s usb as storage or the cf card to dowload files form pc.
the sound of this machine is very cool and the mastering section is a killer.
some cool fx are unfindable on the other sps (tumbling, spatializer, etc)

Yeah, all the software really does is allow you to use the 606 as an audio interface. You also got some crazy software for it too, but never used that.

You can still USB the 606 and drag and drop samples into, so no issues there.

Like ellaguru, there are some nice FX on it. And 16 velocity pads, mute groups, visible wave editor are sweet (damn, think I want a 606 again after talking about it!)

I loved the D-beam too, as you could use it to filter samples for a live show (Afta-1 does a similar thing live with the 555 in some of his live youtube vids)

i used the 606 for some live too, because of its 512 cf card (also).
a tip is to put dbeam on filter so you can use the other 2 mfx together with dbeam (on filter as we said) and you have a 3fx simultaneously combo!
the only thing with fx is that they'arent of immediate manipulaton as on 202/303/404/555: like on 505 they're not straight on your face so you have to teach yourself or note where (the position) they are...another roland paradox...(at least on the 505 some of them are written on near the pads)

If you have a DAW already, use that instead of the P606 program. Plus don't forget you can use the SP as a soundcard- sampling direct from DAWs rule!

damn, i'm on win7 and they didn't made that upgrade, what a shame! i used to use the sp606 on win xp and it was very cool as a soundcard.
ot
some says that it's possible to use win xp on win7 with some manipulations but they also say that in that way the latency is big...

I've heard people getting it to work on a 32 bit win7, but I got a 64 bit machine!

all you need is a USB to get it to work as a soundcard, then you can record directly from the DAW? would this work with a macbook?

Unfortunately i don't know the mac world but i remember that there were also mac drivers on the roland site. So you should check those but who knows...

The 606 isn't showing up in my driver preferences or in my DAW...it says it's not compatible with Intel-based Macs....any solution at all?

unfortunatly P606 does not work on Mac, as well as the USB driver which is included in the original packaging does not work with Mac's Mountain Lion -.- but well, you can use it as mass storage device. so Drag and Drop your files via Finder into your SP.
Unfortunatly, USB1.0 is f****** slow... so you should consider enough time to get things done.
EDIT: Now after posting this, i received an answer from Roland, giving me this site to download the recent drivers for Win and Mac (i m macuser since a few weeks)
http://www.rolandus.com/products/details/573/downloads
Hope my edit can help you.

got it working finally...had to uninstall the other versions of the driver I had and delete them all from my hard drive so I could make sure I was installing the right version with Intel-based support

what is the fastest, most convenient and overall best way for me to load samples from Ableton into the 606? can I do it with just a USB somehow (no P606) or will I need a memory card? could always try a USB to RCA as well...

Usb to compact flash: you will always need one 'cause sp606 cannot load samples without it. Usb to rca doesn't exists: usb stands on itself (so you have audio from usb to usb)
