hey i'm wondering if anyone can help.

i was using the 505 to pitch-bank one of those lame preset sounds, and it went about 5 notes up the scale and is now stuck in processing.

it's been probably about 25 minutes with that bar going back and forth, and one pad highlighted (the note in question), and it seems frozen.

it's never "processed" for this long b4.

i've pressed every button, nothing changes.

the screen says "keep power on!" (with the exclamation mark!) but i don't see any other way to stop this freeze up.

has anyone shut it down when it says don't shut it down? anything bad happen? any long-term effects?

any advice that doesn't mangle my machine is welcomed.

thx

I guess at worst, it could corrupt all your data..

I don't think the actual machine/OS would break.

update: waited about an hour and a bit, went back, no changes to the 505.

shut down the power. turned it back on:

no problems, thankfully. everything seems to be there (hopefully the functions are all okay too).

scary thing tho, cuz they make such a big deal about shutting it off while processing, you know?

i make only a supposition.
maybe you had the 505 memory almost full?
or
maybe you get some hyper lo-fi samples there?
just supposition.

that never happened to my 505 until now.

oh yeah, the 505 is basically ALWAYS full. heh. and i had just pitched something across pitch-bank one, and this freeze up was upon doing something across pitch-bank two. so yeah, i also figured it froze just looking for spaces to put things.

still, i'll mess around today to make sure that it is all okay.

the irony with this is that i haven't used the pitch bank in ages, and the 'preset' samples in even longer. first time i do so, blammo.

i'll have to try this again because i need to know what worx and what doesn't - ie: is the pitch bank gonna freeze up every time, or was this a one-off problem.

i used sometimes to make the pitch of some presets basses, and it worked. could you check your smartmedia card also? sometimes it causes me some troubles (the 505 doesen't read the card banks and i have to fromat the smatmedia with the sp-303).

It should be ok, because when I got my 505 sometimes it could lock up when I was doing some crazy stuff, but it never gave me any problems after I turned it off in such way. I even pulled out the card many times when I it was playing the sequence and nothing happened. The only thing to worry about is when you are actually writing something to the card (not your case because yours was locked up) and then you turn off the 505 or pull out the card - then the data might get corrupted on the flash but other than that everything should be fine. No worries there.

this question seems answered already, but, no it won't hurt the machine. I've had to reset mine this way a few times. I'm pretty sure it says "keep power on!" because you need to keep the power on for it to full finish the process. Instead of someone thinking they can just push the button and switch off the machine right away.

Anyway.

uno!

totally cool guys. thx for the replies. yeah, it did all work out okay, but it made for some nervous times there. sweating. hitting every pad. searching the forum. lol.

i even went back in (after doing the off-on) and redid the process that locked it up, and it worked out fine.

but good to know that others have done this, and to never do it while writing to the card. i'd hate to mangle the little 505 beast...

lil beat beast with its beast beats.
