to add on, im fairly sure you can edit the start and end points with out destructive chopping if desired.

Yup you can and it has super nifty waveform display too. I just mention backing up as I have run into that myself wanting to adjust something but had truncated already.
I did run into an issue where it would never display the wavform on a 30sec stereo sample. I shut it down and converted the sample to mono and it worked fine. Odd little glitch it had. Other than that rock solid.

Yeah, I was thinking the best place to edit the samples would be in the sp505, add an effect, then re-sample it into the S20. I'll still only have a few samples I can load into it, but then if I re-sample some pitch bends up/down BACK into the sp, then the floppys aren't really the issue. Kind of depends on the process, because if it's just too complicated, I could see myself getting lazy and not bothering. But, if it's easy, and there's enough memory to work with, why not?

I expect some frequencies dulled off a bit in the audio swapping, but that might give it that old school grit and make it unique somehow. I'll just have to see. I looked at my finances, and nope, no 505 for me until October 4th. But by then, watch out!

I bet you will be good w 505. You might want to get a 128MB card to max it out. There are a few practices that will be good to think about.

1- Stereo or mono? Mono cuts memory usage by half. do you really need certain things to be stereo? This is even more of an issue for polyphony. I have started to use more and more mono samples and it actually is interesting to hear the 2- I have made cool transitions by going from mono to stereo.
example:
https://soundcloud.com/clifford-novey/c ... ush-for-sp

2- sample as normal, long, lo-fi? Sample at lowest quality setting that makes you happy. Lower settings are often acceptable and save significant space but can also introduce shitty frequencies and such- you can EQ those out sometimes though.

3- truncate- but not too quickly (in case you need another part or to adjust later) I always do this- good habit to get into. I make temp copies often of samples and patterns before I do destructive or extensive work. every second can count. I even do it on my SX w 32GB card just to make it a habit.

4- use card banks on 505- obvious but easy to forget at first

5- loop only what you need- if you have a 4bar chop and second half is same as first consider chopping it in half. sometimes there is variation you want but often not really needed.

Anyway hope that is useful!

C

Yeah, I assume most of the .wavs are in stereo, but you can convert them to mono in the 505 if needed, right? If not, no worries, S20 can.

Hi Headphones,

I think your process idea sounds great. I have been wanting to sort out a way to switch i/o between my diff SP and such so I could send audio between whatever ones I want but the issue of feedback loop always crops up. I bought a Behringer USB302 mixer which is an awesome little piece and has some i/o switching but it is not enough. I just end up turning output down and re-cabling. Need to find like a switch box or something that mutes other than what is selected or something.

Yes you can convert stereo-->mono on the 505 but only in that you can resample it in mono (no direct convert ability). But on the 505 you have the awesome ability of setting resampling to auto and unlike other SP boxes it will auto start AND stop! Very figgin' handy.

I wish there was a setting to always set new samples to Gate by default. If I had a nickel for every time....

Damn, thanks for that tidbit of info! I haven't decided what cheap mixer I want to aim for. I'd like about 4-6 inputs, effects would be nice (The Behringer DDM4000 could fit the bill), or even a used Gemini/Newmark, connect my electribes, 505, s20, and maybe a Korg Kaoss pad of some sort. I do have a Mackie 20 channel mixer, but I don't really have a decent place to plop it down, due to it's size. So something about 19" tops is all I'd need. I'm sure I could even "perform" this setup if I get good at it, and can find a gig or whatever.

I still have mine and actually is the only sampler I am using lately, portable, easy to use, LoFi sound, FXs, etc... Only thing I would change about it is no 8 outs... that's the only thing I don't dig of the SP series...

You can see me playing a couple SP-505 beats on this interview I did for Scratch Magazine TV, this is episode 3 of 4, if you like you can check other episodes in that Youtube channel

Very cool about the polarizing film for the 505. Neat. WTF is up with that cameraman, are you in witness protection or does he just love your torso?

And I raise you...

http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/DDM4000.aspx

Because when I meant inputs, I meant channels. I've got 2 electribes, a DX200, Akai S20, SP505, and down the road I want a CDJ deck or turntable. I'm a bit of a meglomaniac when it comes to what I've got cooking...Heh heh heh.

Right on. Sounds like you could need up to 6 stereo channels (12 inputs).
That DDM4000 looks nice. You would have to use the tape ins and both xlr mic inputs to get 6 stereo channels.
