got a SP555 already, getting a SP505 in the mail this week hopefully.

Other than how great vinyl sim is :), what else can you tell me; hints / shortcuts / stuff to avoid etc.

Links to your 505 beats also appreciated.

hey-ya blav. congrats bro.

the whole trix n tips section for the 505 is solid, but OLBY's videos on the youchube are kind of incredible for giving you the full picture. lots of good stuff in there from the basix on up.

advice, return it. Nah, im just joking. Get down with the auto resample, i like that the most. Instead of having to resample manually and re-edit your end points, when you set resample to auto, and select the pad you want the new sample to go to, and select the pad you want to resample, it starts and ends it for you. So if you have a loop, it'll maintain your end point so you dont have to re-trim like alot of the other machines.
Oh, and sample "LONG" or lofi. you get way more sample time and LONG sounds pretty good. Do this especially if you didnt get a card with it.
Thats all i got.
Have fun.

All my beat tapes been on the 505...

Fav is the compressor and vinyl sim, it blends everything so well.
And isolator is a really good hi mid lo filter too
I mix all my beats thru the 505, when recorded in long it gives a nice warm feel to samples..

It chops up drums quite well too...

Welcome to the 505...

My only recommendation could be spend enough time with your new sampler, you are going to find your way very fast (since it has a screen and make it simple) I watched those OLBY's tips and tricks but doesn't show me anything that I already knew from my 303 background, anyways if you don't know anything about the 303 or 505 go ahead and check those clips, probably you could find something that you don't know about the sampler...
I hope you enjoy your new trip.
Peace.

thanks, good tips - I'll check out the Olby vids.
Good to know on the Auto Resample too, that's very useful - I hate that on the 555 you lose your start/end markers when you resample.

You guys use the 4 track alot? that is one thing that I thought was cool, SP555 is only 1 track sequencer...would be nice to switch drums/samples off and on easily that way.

I personally use it a lot, this is one of the most important things why I love my 505, I always hate the only 1 track available on my 303, 4 tracks is not that much anyways but at least it is better than 1... I use 1 for sequence my sample chops, 1 for Kicks and snares, 1 for hihats, open hh, cymbals, etc and the other one for bass line, if I need to use FX sounds or more sounds I just play it in real time when I'm recording into my DAW, I would love to see a SP with at least 8 tracks and 8 outputs tho, I love making beats on the SP but not all the work that I need to do to record everything into my multitrack, that sucks for sure!

Yes four tracks seem to be enough most of the time.
I do :
Track 1- sample (stereo)
Track 2- drums (mono)
Track 3-hi hats (stereo)
Track 4- effects (stereo)
Then play other effects live when recording to tape.
And u can't record mutes... you have to manually mute tracks while you record.

When u run out of voices it does some weird cool stuff. Like chops it self or mutes random tracks at random times. And when u r running out of sample time mine manipulates the sample sometimes.

i use the 4-track all the time. i like that it is limited cuz that makes me figger out workarounds.

but coming from a 404, yeah, 4-tracks are like a full studio. lol.

4 track studio, nice!Ya cutting shit out is key to slight variations, so that part is pretty cool. I just cant get around the sequencer. It fucks me up everytime. I even spent a night trying to figure it out, just solely sequencing on the different timing quantizations and i guess im just way off because it always seemed to put something out of place. Kinda sucks when your just flowing and you cant get one drum on the 8th measure to sequence right. Then you gotta delete and wait like 7 measures.
When i had my mpc 1k, it seemed like that shit knew me and knew my rhythm. Id assume quantization on all machines should be close to the same, its the same points on a grid if your using quantization, so i never understand why my 505 is not being a good friend.

505 is the most mystical of the SPs. There's so much that the manual does'nt tell you. I like the clip board for chopping drums. Way better than resampling, just copy the drums to as many pads you want and trim the parts you need in each one. Poor man's non-destructive chopping.

Seqencing can be a bitch, but when u mess up, playing ur drums for example, u can always go to micro scope edit and move the kick back to 1:00 or even push the snare from 2:00 to 2:45!...to give it some swing!

Can also adjust gate and volume on individual hits thru micro scope.

that's a solid tip from chicagosp - micro gets overlooked a lot and it can save yr ass!

springwater, are you turning off the quantize? like after you hit record, that lil highlighted area in the countdown? i didn't even know where it was for the longest time, and now i just keep it off. everything gels better.
