Moved the setup to a desk and added a in/out selector box so no more swapping cables while recording back and forth between SP and loop pedal. Super fast, no cable mess, hit a switch to swap in's to outs's and no more deafening feedback. Workflow is sweet, monitor Digitone with earbuds to record guitar in time to 404, trim and resample as needed. Digitone controls 404 via midi and record entire performance to looper, then record back to 404 for jam and upload to PC.

Hell yes, good idea! Next step for me I think... I want to be able to switch between bouncing the whole chain back to the 808 or recording to Ableton, plus sometimes I want to 303 at the start of the chain for the pitch effect, sometimes the end of the chain for the compressor...

Just got a bigger tabletop for my height-adjustable desk (love standing up to play) but damn if it's still too cramped to get the 202 in there

@ l i f: Looks great, never tires looking at gear porn.

You could get that 202 in there. Grab a headphone stand or screw a coat hanger in the side wall for quick and cheap.

Oh cool, you got pedals hooked up to the 404 from the Digitone? Thats freaky my man. I got few pedals myself, aint nothing like analog effects in the chain. I recently bought the Sea Machine, its bananas, but if you don't want to spend boutique prices, try the Dr. J Shadow Echo, almost like the Sea Machine but has its own character. ;)

I just got a good deal for the 404A, should be here on Monday. Still got the ol' dirty 303, I wonder how is the differences between the two though I've read about them but experience is another story.

Sorry Ill, just saw this. No pedals in between, Body rez is for my acoustic to give more of fat tone while sampling and the Jam Man express is a stereo looper that I use to bounce and record performances. All works well. I try real hard to not go down that pedal wormhole again, why I now stay away from electric guitar. There are so many good pedals out there that'd I'd prolly lose my house with that addiction. I keep reminding my self that the 404 is all I need when it comes to effects, though that Sea Machine looks awesome.

Posted over at elektronauts but thought the 404 crowd would like this too.
Made with lefty as I banged up my right shoulder and useless atm, as with other things, I didn't do so well with the jig saw but it came out ok.

would you be willing to tell me anything about its abilities and workflow and effects and stuff? compare it to the abilities of a 404 or something i guess? if you don't mind, of course

A quick overview of the SP-808 for you.. :)

64 Banks
16 Pads
Digital Multi Track Recorder
D-Beam
Multiple FX (many of these are modelled on the Boss series of pedals)
Vari-Pitch (incremental + & - for sampling)
Built in Mono Synth
Step Sequencer
4 pad Re-Sampling capability.
Samples at 44.1 and 32 kHz SAMPLING-RATES.
BPMs of loops can easily be adjusted to match song tempo.
10 Band VOCODER

The 10-band Vocoder offers control over the individual frequency Bands, the Level, Sensitivity, Mix, Pan, Envelope and many more parameters. It also includes its own dedicated delay (1ms - 1195ms) and chorus.

Onboard Roland reverbs, chorus and delays including Delay RSS, Space Echo and Flanger, as well as Distortion, "Lo-fi," "Wah," "Band Isolator" and analog synth processing
Onboard Step Modulator effect simulates a classic Roland analog synth, modulating pitch, LFO, etc. in sequential steps.

The samplers combination of onboard FX really are second to none... there would need to be a separate thread just to discuss the merits of them here!

You have a full set of on board editing features with the 808 which makes chopping and trimming stuff really easy.

There's also an optional 0P-1 Expansion Board.. it can be installed into the sampler which then gives you separate outputs and allows for digital, lossless transfer, you'll have the ability to send mixes to DAT, MiniDisc or CDR via co-ax and optical digital outputs, or to another mixer, using the multiple stereo track outputs.

The 808 is one powerful machine ..I'm in the process of getting mine fixed back up at the moment.

There's a thread about issues with the blank screen that Quan started, here on the forum .

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=26278

The only problem for me has been the Zip Drive which can be pretty unreliable and prone to disk read errors although it's possible to install a card reader from the blue version of an Akai MPC 2000 to replace the Zip as the 808 has a 40 pin header connection.

Ive used quite a few different samplers over the years and I can honestly say that I've never come across a nicer sampler than the SP 808 (when they're working properly :)) ..the overall design and layout of the controls is perfect in my opinion, the 16 pads are smaller than the 404's but wider spaced so no problem with them being that size plus you could midi up a controller keyboard as an option if you wanted to for the playback of your samples.

The SP-808 has Midi In, Out & Thru.

This is literally just scratching at the surface of what this sampler can do (as members here who own these things would also possibly tell you)so yeah, it's an excellent piece of gear overall.. as much as I love my SP-404 and its own unique features the 808 is vastly superior in terms of whats possible sampling wise when working with the machine.

holy shit man, that's a fucking powerful machine
the vocoder sounds sick as fuck, and i've always wanted a good one
mixer sounds awesome
ugh for my next purchase i've been debating between getting a powerful sampler or a good synth like the OP-1, i have no fuckin synths

thank you so much for explaining all this shit for me!!!! you definitely didn't have to do that. much appreciated

No worries at all... It's definitely a sampler worth investigating if you come across one that you can have a play around on.

If you ever do decide to grab one, I'll just say again, be wary of any issues that can possibly arise with the Zip Drive - although there are other solutions to this problem as I mentioned earlier- .. that's really my main advice here.
