Hi there!

I got a broken 404sx for free and am going to take a crack at fixing it.

The problem is that no audio will go through or out of it, despite appearing to function normally otherwise.

It boots up fine, and also responds to incoming audio when sampling and will save it to a pad, ect, its just that nothing will actually come thru either the headphone or rca outs no matter what you do.

I have had a couple ppl tell me that the volume pot has died and that it just needs to replaced.

Also all of the knobs are quite loose, though all the control pots seem to work fine.

So my questions are:

1. has anybody else had this problem, and did replacing the volume pot fix it?

2. is it possible to fix the looseness of the control pots without replacing them?

3. if I replace the control pots with the same part that is used for the volume pot
(RK09K12C0A2S) will it fry the thing? I only ask this bc while it seems pretty easy to get this part, it seems much harder to get the same part for the control pots.

anyway if any of you decide to help me with this I would be greatly appreciative. i have a friend who is experienced with soldering to help me with this so I will not be flying utterly blind here.

Much thanks.

VOLUME and CONTROL Potentiometers are not the same (different model-nr. and different sockets afaik) just a heads up...

i would give it a try since these pots are relatively cheap and with a bit of luck you'll probably have the cheapest 404 on the planet

I'm guessing that the linked pots will probably work, but it's worth noting that they are not actually spare parts as the original pots were manufactured by ALPS and the pictured pots are not. They're also missing the "sleeve" which can impact long-term reliability since it provides additional support and further isolates the actual conductive material in the pot doing the work from oxygen and debris.
