forgive if this is stupid, i cannot find anywhere.
on the sp404 i have a sample of a few seconds long, when i hit the pad the sample plays, and if i hit that pad again, the previous playback stops and it plays it again from the start. is there anyway to have it playback the sample in full each time i hit the pad? it sounds un natural for there to be no decay. if you cant do this, would an mpc500 do it?

thanks in advance!

You mean for the sample to play on top of each other? Yeah the SP doesnt do that. An Mpc will though

Turn off GATE and LOOP and it will play the full sample.

Page 12 in the owner's manual explains the different play modes.

Yeah what V. Thor said.
No with the 404
Yes with 500 (you can set samples to poly or mono, can also assign mute groups).

404 - If you want the sample to overlap (poly) just copy it to another pad.

If the og 404 doesn't allow you to copy samples (I have the 404sx), I guess resample it to another pad so you have 2 copies of the sample (this is how you would get the same sound to overlap without cutting it off).

Turn gate off to allow the sample to play all the way thru without having to hold the pad down (turn loop off if you don't want it to loop). Turn gate on if you only want to hear the sample while holding the pad down.

& I'm not sure what you mean by it sounds un-natural without a decay.....
the 404 doesn't have a decay setting as it is. It's a straight cut where ever you chop. so you can't get a decay unless you make it in something else.

Only other thing I can think of that could give a similar effect is putting delay or reverb on the sample (mess with the settings until it sounds good, maybe small amount of feedback (middle knob) & 16 or 32 delay (knob on left), knob to the right which is delay amount make that a small amount too)...... this could help blend it........
