I’m starting to get back into creating animations. I used to make them awhile ago using GIMP (free photoshop kind of thing). I would create them frame by frame and then stitch the whole thing together using QuickTime.

I’m without a computer at the moment, so am starting to do a similar type of thing with Procreate and another app for making gifs. I like to draw elements and then “sample” other bits, I wanted it to feel like visual beatmaking, SP kind of style. GIMP and procreate are both great for this as you can import images and photos, both have nice brushes for drawing, and both allow you to utilise layers and mangle with effects.

The only drawback I find with the frame by frame method is how time consuming it is. Does anybody else do something similar and have any apps or programs they can recommend? Preferably mobile, but I’m open to anything else too, as hopefully I’ll have a computer again soon.

Here’s a link to my channel if you want to subscribe and check out the older animations I did https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcZnuPa8b0sjO0p0-__ldJg.

Time permitting, there should be a couple of new ones up soon. I’m probably going to hit people up on here for beats too to soundtrack them as I’m samplerless at the minute :(

Man you’re right on time with this post. I was just thinking about this earlier today. I had an idea of creating this network of animations just for beats, exactly like the stuff your doing. I checked out the one on your channel , pretty cool; is it hand drawn by you or do you use different images offline and stitch them together? I’m into animation as well but my graphics tablet is super outdated. If I ever get a new one I’d be using photoshop to animate. If you need beats just let me know I’ll send some your way.

I do a bit of a mix. I’ll hand draw some, and some images I’ll find and modify them so everything blends into something new. There are bits of linocut I did in there, I used a gif I found of an mri in that one too. Whatever works really. I like a kind of collage style.

I did try using photoshop for a little while. I remember it had a feature where you could define the start and end point of an item and it would fill in the middle frames. Saves time, but something about it was a bit limited (you couldn’t scale or rotate. Something like that, I can’t remember exactly). I also end up liking the non smooth style a bit more.

I’m sure there is a lot you can do with the new drawing tablets, but mine was pretty outdated too, did the job though.

I’ve got some stuff going with Procreate, if it comes out any good I’ll shoot it over to you for music.
