Anyone here familiar with this dude and his YouTube videos? I've been hooked on his videos for the last week or so and this one made me think of sp's and what a lot of cats here do. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B0c4UBWFW-w
He does a lot of stuff on music theory and scientific principles of music perception and he does it all in a really accessible and easy to follow way. I figured I'd post it here cuz I find his stuff really inspiring and maybe someone else will too. Some of it's really nerdy and technical but most of what he talks about can be applied to beat making as well as any other musical practice

Yeah he gets into some pretty deep technical stuff sometimes but it seems like he always relates it to something relevant and useful. I'm a huge theory nerd so I love that stuff

Right on man, that's awesome you're trying to broaden your musical knowledge, piano is definitely a good instrument to learn on cuz it's so straightforward. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!

And MG the future's channel is a treasure chest of tips as well

I love this video, can't share it enough.
Everyone concerned, or involved with music theory / harmony / arrangements ought to watch it, trust me

Yeah knowing basic theory is key if you want to mature as a musician or producer.

Have a basic understanding of your scales. As in what makes major scale and what makes a minor scale.

Knowing your circle of fifths and triads.

Understanding the lingo. As in II-V-I, 7ths, dominants, inversions, ect...

It's a life long learning experience, so don't be ashamed of not being an expert right away. You don't have to follow the "rules" but knowing them gives you a better understanding and better utilization out of what your playing or what is being played on the record your sampling.

These are great, played guitar forever but always a bit intimidated with theory and such. Will definitely check em all out.

The basics are kinda easy, but they seem like an impenetrable castle when you see it for the first time. I think that it's really worth to know some theory and no needing to reinvent the wheel every damn time XD.

I learned almost everything that I know about theory from justinguitar.com, he is an amazing dude that does that for years and years now, everything is free in his site.

I've watched a bunch of this guy's videos. He is really informative, but his demeanor comes off as condescending. I don't know, maybe that's his sense of humor. Maybe it's me. I am surprised though that he has covered videos about sampling. Usually people with music degrees don't have many nice things to say about sample based music, especially after studying all that classical music.

People like him who resume vapor : "pitch down an old pop music" just doesn't know really vapor...+ he critisizes the sound and aestetic (saying you just need pitch down, dolphins and fiji water) but he's not capable of reproduce because he's not into the vibe. The end of the video is just pathetic
He says the movement is dead, but who is he to judge the death of a music mouvement ?! that he's not even into
i'm not really into vapor but saying what they doing is too easy is false
In music , there are often things that can't be explained by theories (and he's saying this himself), especially for sampled music and i think this is the limitation of knowledge which creates a special type of sound (like a lot of SP producers), still interesting to know this but boomshack boomshack, 4 chords and a good bassline are enough for me
oh and the way the guy of "You suck at producing" speaks is insupportable
