Great convo regarding the minidisc players.

I just copped one of the last generation of Panasonic boom boxes that still has the dual cassette... cost me $25 without speakers (which I don’t need, read on). It’s main purpose is that I have a couple different setups & needed to move source material from 1 to the other. I have a sampletrak attached to the cassette deck in our living room listening area without any other gear. It’s all vintage stuff so the turntable is not much fun to sample from, and the sampletrak is small enough that I could sneak it in there without upsetting wifey. Anyways... I record the master out from my studio setup to tape... usually throw on some drums and a couple song snippets from vinyl. Then the material is basically prepped for sampling from the tape.

I love tapes, 8-tracks, vhs’s’s, ... all the old media and players. I love the concept of putting out beat-tapes on tape. In my opinion it’s the next best thing to pressing ur own records. Get ur music on some form of media w printed artwork/packaging. I like the wabble & compression... high overhead noise, etc. I understand it’s not for everyone.

I’m wondering how many cats on here still mess with the tapes? Sample from them? Record to them? Use them as part of ur production process? Multi-track or consumer?

Everything I make on the SP's at the moment is recorded live, directly to a tape deck or a Sony MDS JE520 Mini Disc recorder ..

I like to keep it dusty....

....mostly.. :D

I used to record to cassette when I got my first set of turntables - I was really into rappin & freestylin, did a little scratchin...... this was around 20 years ago. I was 17....recorded to cassette because my dad had a dual cassette deck & I blew all my money on the turntables & mixer.

Now a days I sample from cassette & vinyl, mostly vinyl, but don't record to cassette. Been thinking about it. I have an R16 (digital recorder), but all 8 inputs went out 1 by 1. If repairs cost more than I want to pay I'm def going for a multi track cassette recorder. Might get one either way.

This always cracks me up.

Man, the idea has been growing on me. I used to hate tapes growing up, once CD's became the norm. Probably because I always had some busted tape deck that would eat tapes or I would get mix tapes from friends that were overdubbed a million times with recordings from other tapes. But I did pick up a later model dual deck JVC for free a while back and a TEAC 4 track reel to reel for $60 at a resale shop, with 5 reels with a bunch of classic rock albums on them. I was planning to use it for bouncing, but it would be cool to track something out on it. Oh, while I'm thinking...

Yessss! This has been on my mind for a while bro. Let’s make it happen!

I’ll capture some stuff off cassette & 8-track this afternoon/evening & start a special tape challenge that is open to SP or Sampletrak. We can keep the sample material open ended for anyone who wants to upload stuff from taped media... vhs & beta included!

Hell yeah! I'm down. I'll see what I can dig up also.

Taking me a minute to get on this. Hopefully tonight. I’ve run into one of those epic outside work weekends & been to wiped out to motivate in the evening. The weather out here has been killer. Spring is in the air.

Hopefully between tonight & tomorrow I can record some stuff.

Same here. Been super busy. Just keep it simmering on the back burner, we'll get something going.
