in the end if moog is worth more than a op-1 for you, it all comes down to preferences and tastes

Precisely! I prefer the sound of analog synthesis over digital. I have no issue with people liking digital synthesis. that's how i started to learn about them and i think it can particular tones that analog synths can't.

Some of the greatest albums of all time were used with monophonic analog goodness and their audience didn't seem to care.

The BCR2000 is a dope ting, I have the ZAQUENCER firmware on mine that turns it into a sequencer for controlling synths. Its very crazy and dope.

I think soon it will be hard to get one as people realise you can use them for zaquencer and stuff

Moog invented Synthesis, that's why they are the standard bearer for synths

It’s a semi relative question who invented synthesizers or electronic music in general. After WW2 the Brits had formed the EMS studios, which Tristam Cary made from obsolete radio/radar equipment, tape loops, etc. But besides the theme for Dr. Who (original Black & white version), I cant verify there was a lot of music recorded for the general masses of the 50’s/60’s.

A YouTube documentary explains this in detail.

https://youtu.be/8KkW8Ul7Q1I

There is also the German Krautrock Scene which was where Kraftwerk, Can, Neu, Tangerine Dream contributed to electronic music while trying to forge ahead in a divided Germany, and appalled by the crimes their parents were involved with or did nothing to stop. Making German rock be less American influenced, but more...tribal perhaps?? But that doesn’t necessarily tell the tale
of Electronic Synthesizers beginnings. But more of the effect that Krautrock had in making the sounds that would be sampled into Africa Bambatta’s “Planet Rock” from sampling Kraftwerk’s “Trans Europe Express”, to influencing Synth Britannia in the 70’s/80’s.

But most of the history of electronic music mainly gets mentioned is the east coast/west coast synthesis. Don Buchla in the West, Bob Moog in the east. I don’t know too many west coast synth artists who used Buchla synthesizers other than Herbie Hancock, but later he switched to Moogs, Arps, Yamaha DX7s, etc.

It gets a bit confusing who really invented it all, because it kind of depends on who could think of & invent the equipment, and what could be done with them that was decades before we had MIDI, Daws, etc.

Some companies faded into obscurity, but are still highly sought after synths. (ARPs, Sequential Circuits, EMUs, etc)

Thought I'd throw in my 2 cents on the MicroKORG/MS-2000 vs Minilogue responses, since I've spent a lot of time making patches for both.

Quote:
these days everyone have it so there's often that microkorg sound everywhere

If you're adept at making patches you can break away from that "MicroKORG" sound. The sound engine is actually quite neutral and tasteful.

I'd say the big difference between the MicroKORG and the Minilogue is complexity. The Minilogue is really simple, and quite limiting in what you're able to do with it. That can be to its advantage. Also, there are knobs for 95% of the settings, so you really tweak the sounds in real time, which can be nice in order to make the music more dynamic. However, if you're loading presets, you have no idea what the knob it set to, so it's not that intuitive. With microKORG it's more of a deep dive in order to coax great sounds out of it. The software patch editor helps a lot with that process, but you still need to have a good grasp and sense for sound design if you want to get anything good out of it. The MicroKORG XL also has a very powerful synthesis engine in a small package, worth being on your radar.

^^Cool. I prefer synths with dedicated knobs on the panel instead of the dive you have to do with the MK.

but forget both of those, i'm going for that Moog Sub Phatty. Sure it's one voice but it's 2 oscillation with a sub oscillator, latter filter with multi drive analog goodness!

Nothing sounds like Moog!
