What are your favorite? Any genre

Do you prefer an album with a concept opposed to a collection of songs ?
Or does it not make a difference as long as it’s good music ?

everything with a gimmick sells better.

i fuck with the way doom released his instrumentals as the names of herbs.

also madlib, under his moniker quasimoto, in the unseen... quasimoto is the "evil side" of madlib's personality, the "bad character" and the unseen entails quasimoto's experiences as a delinquent in the underbelly of society.

kids love mcdonalds because they put playgrounds inside of their restaurants and have lovable characters with stories behind them about burgers

quasimoto the character is a gimmick created by madlib (Otis Jackson)

the special herbs track listings are a gimmick

the Gorillaz has a gimmick of the fictional cartoon band and it was EXTREMELY successful

makes no difference tbh . some artists produce better open concept . others better concept driven .

i do like Madlib Beat Konducta themes .. especially 5-6

Yeah but at the same time you don't have the same freedom. A concept album gives you more constraints. Someone going the route of a concept album from the getgo with an SP404 is either a monk or a masochist pervert. It takes longer to create a concept album and remember... it's not about bangers, it is about being true with what you intended to do in the first place. Example : you're producing 40 beats for your concept album. 35 of those are bangers. You won't use those just because they don't fit the concept even though they're bangers. Remains 5 isn't it ? If those 5 don't suffice to illustrate the concept you want, you'll have to produce 40 more till you have all the right tracks. Which means delays and delays and delays... Opt for conceptual EPs or conceptual collections. Basically, produce first and massively and, second, think of a concept or you'll end up in a semiotical abstract maize. All those conceptual artists were making a vision real... it is maybe why they're so good. They were more in a composer stance than a producer one. Lastly, Doom's Herbs are no conceptual album. It is more putting all his work in perspective.

^great post

-I cant see being too hard to make a concept album using a 404 , in fact you inspired me to make my next project a conceptual album strictly on the 303

-Instead of just producing 40 tracks which only 5 are useable , why not go in with a plan to make each track you make in coherence with your concept from the jump & if along the way it doesn’t fit with you me criteria start over ? (Asking) though I do agree you can fall into a rabbit hole in the process

-I feel if you produce massively it’s not really true the idea to begin with imo it’s like saying “ okay I’ll select these tracks and make up a concept to tie them in together.” Opposed to disciplining yourself to compose each track to fit with the theme to begin (like writing a book) I can’t imagine an author writing hundreds of pages of randomness and then picking each page to make a book lol

Any other genres besides hip hop ? Well specifically outside of DOOM/madlib/dilla that keeps getting brought up lol.

Anyone familiar with Daft Punk - Discovery?
They did a film Interstellar 5555 . You think they had the plot idea while writing the album , or was it just like one long music video ?

you could consider concept album an OST . like most genre's you got prominant figures. hence the consistent mentions of Dilla, Madlib & Doom . i honestly think alot of artists come up with naming a body of work after . sometimes a concept can either limit the direction .. or swing in the opposite direction . it solely depends on the mind behind the action
