does anybody set deadlines?

how long to start and finish a beat/ song?

.. and do you feel satisfied or feel as though you're progressive with your approach?

Haven't actually wrote a beat yet but have written lots of songs with the guitar and vocals, never set deadlines. Have partial songs from ten years ago that I play and work on still. It's done when it's done.

aha . interesting . I've got a stack of unfinished papers of lyrics stored in a tin . I could go through them and pick elements.

different times take your mind different places . a good way of storing bits and peaces and forgetting . like a depository . then coming back when seeking a motive

Exactly, mood dictates which song I work on or play.

Could come down to hardware sometimes...

Making beats on my SP606 I would usually finish and record the beat in one sitting.

After working on the MPC 1000 for some time I noticed that I was making a lot of unfinished/half-made beats. I think it's due to the fact that you could change the pitch of sample and make it fit so easily to any drum pattern. So I would have all these beats (made faster on the MPC) but a lot of them weren't really dope enough to record on to computer.

On the SP it took a lot more experimentation and usually came out more creative sounding. For me, the more limited I am the better. Even with samples. If youre sampling off youtube.. If the sample doesn't work out for you in the first half hour, its very tempting to try something else. Whereas if you buy a record and are determined to sample it... you'll find a way to make it work - and you might even surprise yourself.

↑ absolutely . I think sampling from an easier obtainable source .. brings down the perceived value in the beatmakers mind apposed to rare or expensive vinyl
