I don't know if I'm just getting old and missing the point but enlighten me...

It seems hardly anyone makes albums anymore, everyone's uploading their tracks directly to soundcloud as soon as it's done. Like a bunch of digital singles.

Is there a benefit to this over crafting an album?

I personally love sifting through tracks and piecing together a nice flowing release and having a few physical copies available for cats that are into and want a hard copy.

Am I stuck in the past? Are people lazy? Am I missing the soundcloud magic?
Does it really matter? I dunno... what do y'all reckon?

I like to do both really, a select few loose joints/battles go up on soundcloud and then I make proper tapes of all new music for bandcamp (these also go on soundcloud).

I think soundclouds good as a lot of the shit I make doesn't fit in to a whole album/EP project so I'd rather people could listen to the best bits than it all just being stuck on my hardrive collecting dust. I think it's a good way to gain more listeners before releasing a tape too if you're consistent with it.

I like doing both as well. Most of what I put on soundcloud ends up on an album. Sooner if its a battle beat or something I really want to release right away, and later if its used to try to lure some ears for an album. I'll always love making and listening to albums. You can paint a picture with a song, but with an album you can create a world. I'm now finished with my next album.. sorry to name-drop here but it will feature the great Dudley Perkins singing a hook.. I couldn't help but mention it.. but anyways, after my next visual art series is finished I plan on making beats freely, and after each one deciding which file to put it in.. 1) beats for an instrumental tape 2) beats for a collab tape 3) beats for a solo tape, and 4) beats for a psycho tape. Probably will take a similar approach with rhymes. One idea that I had for rhymes is posting a verse and asking if anyone has a beat for it. That way I know ahead of time that the collaborator digs the subject.

word.

i guess i feel like if i put throwies on soundcloud it's a misinterpretation on my shit but if i post album quality tracks then I'm watering down for when i put the album out.. especially if its unmixed and unmastered.
so i just stay silent apart from battles

got me thinking heh

@chopperman_ man.. Declaime! that's dope. Lootpack are my main shit! nice

You should make a poll for this topic.
Personnaly, I prefere wait to have enough track to make a tape (even if it's a mini tape) and try to stay on a same universe/style on it.

I like when my fav artists drop a tape more than when they release a track.

ps: I'm preparing a tape with a female singer / & an another tape with GOOD MAMA  soon

I've got nothing but love for the admin here but i wish they would keep the 'MUSIC' section up to date.
it's rad, you can go on there, browse and download all the past releases.
there's this -> http://sp-forums.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=3918
and this -> http://sp-forums.com/music/
but they're both kinda abandoned

the music thread gets pretty busy with singles, maybe ill start a album/ep topic.
minimum 5 tracks or something, what do you guys think?

I identify completely with the original post. SC gets a track once every six months or so, but my main goal is to create a solid album for bandcamp. Beats from sc do sometimes end up on a tape, which in my case doesn't bother me so much cause nobody's really paying attention but me!

Chopperman, nice get for the new tape! I'm excited to hear it!

thats dope chopperman, props for getting the feature!

Also looking forward to yours and GOODMAMA's next collab PILLOW, the last one still gets played regularly.

It would be nice to have a proper thread on here to post up all of our eps/albums in, although it would only work if there was a discussion element to it rather than just another endless list of bandcamp links like the your music section.

Nice one Chopper! Dudley Perkins is one of my favorite singers from the West. His vibe so chill.

I do both. I love making albums, they are like my big movie productions while the lone tracks are like monthly comic strips or a Walking Dead series that make you wonder whats next.

Put your creative vibrations out there, help raise everyone's vibrations...

More creation and less concern with how others perceive it

I reckon that this is all a result of the current state of the music industry, technology and people's music listening habits.

You're not stuck in the past bro, I feel the same way when it comes to this topic. A lot of these producers aren't necessarily lazy but lack the patience and or attention span and dedication to truly form a solid album.

It's all about making a beat. Publishing it. And on to the next one.

Also, I've noticed that people don't really listen to songs all the way through.. Especially DJ's and producers. It's sad really to see someone cut to "the drop" or hook and just kind of scan through a song and completely overlook whatever arrangement the artist might have put together to create a sonic journey for the listener..

:?

Gonna go full disclosure here,
I'm totally guilty of dumping singles on SC, songs I even intend to be put on proper crafted albums/tapes.
After I work on a track, I get really excited and dropping it on SC is like the moneyshot or some shit lol I guess in my mind it's me putting the stamp on it, telling myself I'm done working on it.

I figure at this point, it's pretty harmless, if I drop an album with tracks from SC on it, I delete most of those tracks and leave em on the bandcamp, like a snapshot of what i was up to in that era/phase. The thought has crossed my mind that it might be less exciting to hear a bunch of SC singles on a 'new' tape, but at this point I don't think enough people care, and BC reaches a different audience really. I prefer showing somebody new fully finished bodies of work rather than a SC.

How I see it, primarily SC is where producers listen to other producers, BC is where everyone else is.
