Do you guys think this was live instrumentals or was it samples?
Is it possible that he did this on the 303?

Sounds like it could be both live instruments and samples. He said he uses some live instruments in an interview I saw, so it could be both. I don't recognize any of it as samples, though I don't listen to any jazz so eh.

Mostly samples I would think, might have played the bass or the drums on it but even so, I think when he does play live instruments he samples what he played and then does with it like his vinyl samples.

This track was done with samples. I believe this one was put together on a 606.

Definitely samples, if you listen to the original song called Book of Slim on Blue Note records you'll here that Madlib hardly changed the song at all.

Madlib, was afforded the coveted opportunity to mine the vaults of Blue Note Records -- having full access to the original multi-track recordings.

I've been helping my friend relocate and grow facility and my 303 is some what broken. Only bank D can record sequences when formerly only banks a+b had this problem, I also have to make a complete beat and record it all in on sitting, because if I turn off my sampler the sequences and wiped. At least my samples stay, talk about working with limits. Because of this I took a break but I'll post something new.
